Bolling: Transgender Student Policies Should Be Local School Board Decisions

In 2020, the Virginia Department of Education, under the direction of Democrat Governor Ralph Northam, enacted a policy that required local School Boards to adopt policies that were very accommodating for transgender students.

Fast forward two years later, the same Department of Education, reconstituted by Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, is working to repeal that policy and require local School Boards to adopt new policies that are less accommodating for transgender students: Virginia governor seeks new transgender student policies | The Hill [1].

Both approaches are wrong. These types of ideologically driven statewide policies that change from one administration to the next do little but create inconsistency and confusion. That is not fair to anyone.

The proper approach is to allow local School Boards to adopt policies that are right for their community, without one size fits all mandates from Richmond.
