Bolling: WSJ Poll Shows Independents Leaning Toward Democrats in 2022

This is not good news for Republicans as we head down the stretch to the mid-term elections: Independent voters are now leaning toward Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections: WSJ poll [1].

Independent voters now favor Democratic candidates by a 3-point margin. In March of this year, prior to the Supreme Court’s reversal of the Roe v Wade decision, these same independent voters favored Republicans by a 12-point margin. That’s a swing of 15 points since the Dobbs decision was released.

This, combined with some legislative “victories” for the Biden administration, and the nomination of some very questionable Republican candidates, has significantly changed projections for the fall campaigns. Most political observers now feel that Democrats may actually increase their narrow majority in the U.S. Senate, and the balance of power in the House of Representatives may be closer than initially thought.

This proves a point that I often make to my students. In today’s highly polarized environment, the only thing predictable in politics is the unpredictability of it all. Stay tuned. Much could change in the next 60 days.
