SCOTUS: That Sound You Hear Is Yet Another Smashed Glass Ceiling as History Is Made

Congratulations, Ketanji Brown Jackson!

If you’ve been under a rock, the good news is we have a new Supreme Court justice. The even better news is history was made in the U.S. to the sound of yet another smashed glass ceiling because Judge, er, Justice Jackson, 51, is the first black female Supreme Court justice. I’m a Republican. She was nominated by Democratic President Joe Biden. So politically I may not agree with everything she will rule on in the future. However, she’s a black woman and I am so proud and happy for her. It’s hard to believe it’s 2022 and we still have firsts to conquer.

President Biden reportedly made a promise to House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn during the 2020 campaign to nominate a black woman if a Supreme Court position came open, and he kept that promise. Good for him.

As I watched the vote to confirm – which went quickly until Sen. Rand Paul wasn’t on the floor and they had to wait around for him – I looked at how close it was: 53 yes, 47 no.

Justice Stephen Breyer, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton, will retire at the end of the term. Read more on this pragmatic gentleman whose wisdom and knowledge have been a mainstay of the Court.

Just a quick note: Vice President Kamala Harris is the first black woman vice president – two firsts, actually, because she’s the first woman and the first black woman. Katanji Brown Jackson is the first black female Supreme Court Justice. They were both put there by President Joe Biden.

Why can’t Republicans do this for women instead of becoming angry and melting down when the Equal Rights Amendment is mentioned?
