The Hypocrisy of Bob Good – Updated: Is Bob With Ukraine or Not?

Over the weekend, as his Alma Mater and former employer Liberty University changed the colors of Freedom Tower to blue and yellow while encouraging prayer for Ukraine, few were aware that two weeks earlier Congressman Bob Good (R-VA 05) had co-sponsored a bill to refuse security support resources for Ukraine.

The bill that was submitted February 8, U.S. House 6648, would “prohibit the obligation or expenditure of military or security assistance to Ukraine until operational control of the United States-Mexico border is achieved, and for other purposes.

Even if it passed today, the timeline to complete a wall would take years. Ukraine is in need of help now but Good used them as pawns in a political game of funding the southern border wall. Meanwhile, the citizens of Ukraine are under siege as they watch civilians and military members die from the barrage of firepower from Russian tanks and missiles.

When asked about the war, Good told NBC-29, “I condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine and pray for the Ukrainian people. Strongmen and tyrants on the world stage will always try to exploit perceived weakness.”

Retired Air Force Colonel Dan Moy of Charlottesville, who is running as a conservative candidate for the 5th Congressional District, spent 27 years in active service involving operations and policy experience specializing in national and international security operations.

When asked about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Moy responded, “Americans have always stood against tyranny and now, in the face of Russian aggression, stand with the citizens of Ukraine. Having advised our top military leaders on matters of international security and led combat missions in Afghanistan, I know the consequences of unchecked aggression.”

On Sunday, in a gesture of love and unity, members of Good’s megachurch in Lynchburg shared sheets of paper in the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine, a country that is 67% Christian; each contained the name(s) of Ukrainian citizens to pray for. Wonder if they were aware their congressman and fellow church member was working against the freedom and safety of the very people named on those sheets of paper?

As Russia’s aggression continues to motivate Europe in the largest war there since World War II, the human toll continues to rise in Ukraine. Half a million have fled the country.

“U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet says her office has confirmed that 102 civilians, including 7 children, have been killed, and 304 others injured in violence in Ukraine since Thursday, as she cautioned that the tally was likely a vast undercount” (The Daily Progress). For each of those who died, and that Good’s church prayed for, he co-sponsored a bill to allow those deaths to happen. That, sadly, is the hypocrisy of Bob Good … praying for Ukraine while working on their demise.

UPDATED 3/1/2022: Happy to see that Christian Vanderbrouk, who writes at The Bulwark, has called attention to this proposed bill sponsored by Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) on February 8. “Anyone want to check in with Rep. Rosendale on how his bill to block military assistance to Ukraine is doing?” he tweeted.

Co-sponsors were Bob Good (R-VA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Jody Hice (R-GA), Mary Miller (R-IL), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Bill Posey (R-FL), and Randy Weber (R-TX).

Among others, it was retweeted by two former Virginia Representatives: Barbara Comstock who commented, “Disgraceful,” and Denver Riggleman who was congressman of the 5th District before Good who wrote, “This is performative batshittery. It’s messaging for the far right fringe and it’s serially unserious.”
