Virginia Flags Lowered to Honor Gen. Colin Powell
On Monday Virginia Governor Ralph Northam ordered U.S. and Virginia flags to be flown at half-staff throughout the Commonwealth in respect and memory of General Colin Powell’s service to our country. The former statesman who served in multiple presidential administrations passed away earlier in the day.
Pursuant to President Biden’s Presidential Proclamation to lower the United States flag, I do hereby order that the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia are to be flown at half-staff over the state Capitol and all local, state, and federal buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in respect and memory of General Colin Powell.
I hereby order that the flags shall be lowered until sunset, October 22, 2021.
Ordered on this, the 18th day of October, 2021.
Earlier in the day the Governor, an Army physician and veteran of Operation Desert Storm, wrote of the man who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during that military operation:
Colin Powell was a good and honorable man, and his death is a loss for our country. I was proud to serve under him in the Army during Operation Desert Storm, when he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pam and I are saddened by his loss, and send prayers to his loved ones.
