Former Roanoke Sheriff Octavia Johnson Planning To Join GOP Gubernatorial Field

News circulated Wednesday afternoon that former Roanoke Sheriff Octavia Johnson is planning to throw her hat in the ring for Governor.

Ms. Johnson is running for the Republican nomination which consists of an ever-expanding list of candidates.

In 2005 she became the first woman and first minority to become sheriff, winning re-election in 2009. Four years later she was defeated by the Democratic candidate.

In January 2014 she ran in the special election for theĀ 11th House of Delegates district to fill the seat vacated by Democrat Onzlee Ware but lost to Democrat Sam Rasoul. Rasoul, ironically, is running this year for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor.

The announcement is planned for Thursday at 2:00pm at the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building.
