Election Day 2020 – Open Thread

We’re finally here … Election Day 2020. This is an open thread of observations from Bearing Drift and friends. Feel free to leave observations in the comments. Polls are open 6am-7pm. Vote, America!

8:40: The counting continues in the presidential race.

Thursday 8:30am: In the 5th District Republican Bob Good prevailed over Democrat Cameron Webb.

6:00: Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) has won against challenger Nick Freitas (R) (Washington Post).

Wednesday 7:00am: The nation, as expected, awakened to continued counting for the 2020 presidential election. Absentee ballots in Virginia have until Friday (as long as they were postmarked by Election Day) to arrive and then be counted. Other states have varying deadlines. Every vote will be counted.

7:00: Polls have closed in Virginia. Bearing Drift is signing off.

3:30: Catching up: From Bearing Drift’s Kris Nohe in Prince William County: “There are no lines and voting is light for a Presidential election year.”

1:30: Augusta County – Churchville 475.

1:15: Augusta County – Stuarts Draft 523.

12:20pm: Augusta County – Verona 401.

Noon: From Bearing Drift’s Matt Walton: Bridgewater in Rockingham County – “I talked with my Dad and he voted at 7:45-ish, no line. He said that my mother (Assistant Election Chief) said that there were no lines in the morning like usual.”

11:52: Augusta County – Wilson 510.

11:50: From Bearing Drift’s Matt Walton: Henrico County’s Yellow Tavern precinct – voter #552 out of 3,500 registered. The election chief said there are many absentee/early votes. Matt adds, “This is a heavy Democratic precinct and bodes well for  Spanberger in the 7th.”

11:30: Augusta County – Fort Defiance 610.

11:00: Augusta County – Yancey 587 with 40% who voted early.

9:30: Jason Kenney was voter #213 in his Chesterfield precinct at 8am. This is that precinct’s numbers from 2016:

9:00: Catching up. Drive-by observations: one precinct in Louisa had a short line. Two in Spotsylvania had no one waiting in line.

8:20: FiveThirtyEight’s final forecast. Cook Political Report: U.S. House.

8:00: Over 100 million early ballots have been cast, 73% of the 2016 total vote.

7:45: From Virginia Beach: “The City has partnered with Waze to help residents navigate to and around Virginia Beach’s 100 polling locations. Check the Waze app before heading to the polls.”

7:38: Steven Brodie Tucker waited in line, something he’s never had to do before, at 6:30am.

6:45am: Melissa Kenney has worked her Kents Store precinct in Fluvanna County since 2007. This morning it has the longest line out the door and to the road that she has ever observed. Looks like a busy day at the polls.
