Holsworth: August 6, 2020, Virginia Covid-19 Update

Editor’s note: Bearing Drift is grateful to Dr. Bob Holsworth for permission to share his daily Virginia coronavirus updates. For more, follow him on Facebook.

1. Deaths Increase

The Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Assoication’s (VHHA) daily reports since Monday have showed hospitalizations increasing. On Monday, there were 1205 patients in hospitals and 1349 today.

This trend, however, mirrors the reporting cycle that we saw last week – a relatively low number of Monday due to weekend reporting issues and generally increasing numbers throughout the week. There are essentially the same number of patients in hospitals today than at this time last week (1357).

We are, however, seeing a significant increase in COVID-19 deaths over the last three weeks. In the last seven days, 158 Virginians have passed away from COVID-19, compared to 87 and 47 the previous two weeks. The number of patients on ventilators today, 157, is the highest number since June 7.

2. Cases Level Down (Perhaps)

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) daily reports for the last 3 days have shown 1145, 798 and 818 new confirmed cases. It appears that the total case numbers could be leveling down, but I’ve also noted that the number of tests given have declined since last week.

The 7-day test positivity rate was 7.2% on Monday and 7.3% today suggesting that conditions are relatively steady. This rate is far better than earlier in the pandemic, but does still indicate relatively widespread community transmission throughout the Commonwealth.

Governor Northam noted that the situation in Hampton Roads is stabilizing and I am also seeing case number decline over the last 3 days. Ballad Health is still reporting issues in the far southwest and northeast Tennessee, with increased cases in Grayson and Washington counties.

3. More Colleges and Universities Delaying Student Return

We’ve now seen most of the public universities in Hampton Roads announce that they will start the school year virtually and delay student return to campus for at least two weeks.

More higher ed institutions in Central Virginia are following suit as Virginia State University, the University of Virginia, and Randolph Macon announced delays this week. in students returning to campus.

VCU, however, is sticking to its original plan where students will return to campus mid-month. The VCU chapter of the American Association of University Professors released a statement this week signed by approximately 100 faculty members calling for the university to go fully virtual for the entire semester. Clearly, significant attention will be focused on how well VCU can control the virus on an urban campus where students regularly interact in the community.
