A Walk In the Woods

“There is no point in hurrying because you are not actually going anywhere. However far or long you plod, you are always in the same place: in the woods.” -Bill Bryson, “A Walk In the Woods”

During these days of sheltering in place during the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, we’re grateful to have a little property to walk around when we go outside. Saturday we headed into the woods behind the house, meandering from blooming tree to blossoming wild flower to the woodsy pathway as we ventured deeper and deeper into the greening vegetation. With cell phone in hand, I snapped some photos along the way.

The woods are still wintry looking with bare branches but buds are popping out, encouraged by temps like Saturday’s mid-60s. Join us on our journey as we walk the yard and woods, and enjoy God’s colorful spring palette.

Apple blossoms
One of our apple trees left from the days when our land was part of a farm.
Some call it a honeysuckle bush. Grows wild with very fragrant blooms.

Redbuds. We have them all around the yard, given to us over the years by my mother out of her RVA yard.
The peonies will be blooming in another month or so.

Mock orange from Mom’s yard.

Trees in the woods and up the ridge are budding. They will be leafed out in May.
Hemlock tree from my grandparents’ land in Grayson County.
The dogwoods, Virginia’s state tree, are budding.
“Mom’s maple tree.” When we moved to this house 23 years ago, this was a tiny sapling being strangled by honeysuckle vines so Mom said if the vines were cleared, we could save the tree. She and Mr. M cleared out around it and it not only survived but grew tall (center). So it’s Mom’s maple tree….
Our views in every direction are stunning. I love where we live….
An old wire fence and rotting fence post that mark our property from the days when this was a farm, and the country road went along the other side of this fence. The road is long gone; remnants of the fence remain.
The path….

Shaggy after-winter yard … much work to do.
