Brown: Danielle’s Story

By Jennifer Brown
Chairwoman, 6th Congressional District of Virginia

Imagine being abused, scared, alone, and unarmed. Imagine that your abuser is someone who swore to love and protect you. Imagine that your abuser manipulates the system to make themselves the victim and you the perpetrator. Now, imagine your abuser using the proposed red flag law against you so that you have no ability to protect yourself. This is what almost happened to Danielle.

Danielle is a resident of Rockingham County. She attended the Board of Supervisors Second Amendment Sanctuary meeting on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, because she is a concerned citizen and has handled firearms since she was a child. She also is a survivor of abuse, and found the courage to finally tell her story about why she was against the proposed gun legislation and red flag laws and why Rockingham County needed to declare itself a 2A Sanctuary.

However, Danielle’s story was never told. The Board decided to cut off speaking time and went straight to a vote because the over 3,000 Constitutional Patriots in attendance were ready for the Board to take action. That is when Danielle reached out to me, and why I have decided to share her story, with her permission, because she and other victims like her, need to be heard.

“At first I was on the fence with the proposed legislature on the protective order and red flag laws. As a former abuse victim I thought it wasn’t such a bad idea but then I thought about my own situation.

“He was a felon, therefore shouldn’t have had guns or access to them but he did. He threatened to kill me and threatened to burn my home with the kids and myself inside. He called up to 40 times an hour and took pictures from the woods across the road from my home of my children and myself playing in the yard and would send them to me with menacing messages: ‘I know who came to see you today.’

“Even with all this they denied me a protective order. The cops would tell me, ‘There wasn’t enough there,’ and ‘He was just angry over the split up.’

“For four years he harassed and stalked me, made threats after we split, but it was never ‘enough.’ I was denied assistance from a government agency sworn to protect me. The next girlfriend had it even worse than I did. When the police would show up after she called, he would blame her bipolar disorder and claim she was suicidal even though SHE was bloodied and bruised. The police would call him the next morning to ‘check if he was okay.’ He broke into her home twice after she had the restraining order while she slept.

“The more and more I thought about it, he would have absolutely used the red flag law against me. He would have claimed I was a threat to myself and others and as terrified as I was I probably would have seemed paranoid and a possible danger. I would have had firearms and my pistol taken, making me completely defenseless against him.

“I strongly feel him knowing that I had my pistol was the only thing that kept me and my children safe. Last year alone there were 55,376 protective orders issued. To think the police department can keep up with a massive confiscation of that size is a joke. Red flag would be a top priority and my protection would have been taken before he would have even been served with a restraining order.” -Danielle

Victims of abuse should not be further victimized by their abusers. Victims of abuse should not be victimized by bad legislation written by self-absorbed politicians trying to score political pander points. Law-abiding citizens should not be held hostage by a political party trying to check off a box. Law-abiding citizens should not be made into unwilling victims because Democrats do not care about our Bill of Rights or our Constitution.

Protective orders do not stop anyone determined to cause harm. Yet, the Democrats who want to impose these infringing laws want us to abide by a piece of paper. I have a message for them – how about you abide by the piece of paper that is called the Constitution!

I want to commend Danielle for wanting to share her story. There are millions more that I hope will find the courage to also speak up. Danielle is one of the reasons I fight for our rights. And, I will continue to fight for our rights. Her story is our story, and we all deserve to be heard.
