Nick Freitas Announces in VA-07

Fresh off a write-in victory for re-election in the House of Delegates, Del. Nick Freitas (HD-30) today is announcing his entry into the race to challenge freshman Democrat Abigail Spanberger in the 7th District.

Spanberger has already been highlighted as one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the country heading into the 2020 elections, and for good reason. Trump carried this district 51% – 43% in 2016; and while Republican support has eroded in the Henrico and Chesterfield suburbs that make up a substantial portion of the district, the district still gave Corey Stewart 46 percent of the vote in the 2018 wave year.

Freitas is making his second bid for higher office, after coming within just two points of defeating Corey Stewart in the 2018 Senate primary, a primary campaign many wrote off due to Stewart’s statewide name ID and presumptive status as the nominee. Freitas joins Del. Jon McGuire, who announced last month, and four other candidates in the contest for the nomination, which will be decided at convention next Spring.
