Another Convention Debacle [UPDATE: Now With Quotes from Involved Campaigns]

It wouldn’t be an election cycle in Virginia without a convention doing a fabulous job demonstrating why conventions are a terrible and outdated way to pick nominees, subject to corruption, disenfranchisement, and decade-long grudges. In 2018, it was the 6th District convention, which was so beset with improper self-dealing it required RPV to swoop in. In 2019, it’s the 97th House District. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Now, it’s apparently our obligation as committed Republicans to take sides in a fight happening in a part of the state 99% of us don’t live in, involving candidates I honestly couldn’t pick out of a line-up.

Of course, the typical rabble-rousers on both sides are already geared up in the typical places. The rest of us? Try summarizing it to a friend not involved in politics, and then ask if they want to join you at the next local GOP meeting.

I decided to approach this latest convention debacle as a journalist and reach out to both campaigns for comment. I’ll let you know what I hear.

UPDATE – 9:45 p.m.

Said the first campaign to reach back out to me (note: this is on the record):

I’ll let you know if the other campaign responds.

UPDATE x2 – 9:46 p.m.

The second campaign also gave me an on-the-record response:

Stay tuned for more updates as they come in.
