Cynthia Dunbar Gearing Up For Fourth Campaign For Congress?

There’s a joke about a bad penny, cockroaches after a nuclear war, and so forth. These things keep coming back even though society does not want them nor does it ask for their return.

Virginia Republicans’ bad penny candidate Cynthia Dunbar is potentially coming back for her fourth Congressional campaign, this time as a re-do in the 5th District. Some of you will remember that “God told her to run in the Sixth Congressional District” in 2018. Mrs. Dunbar was soundly defeated in the 6th District in May 2018. Not two weeks after the resounding defeat, she hopped districts and ran in the 5th Congressional District where she was again defeated.

Now, she’s back again.

It’s been heard that Mrs. Dunbar has been meeting with activists across the 5th Congressional District to garner support for a primary challenge to first-term Congressman Denver Riggleman. Sources suggest Mrs. Dunbar has hired the usual suspects that supported her second and third runs (in the 5th and 6th) — 5th District GOP Chairman Melvin Adams and 5th District Vice Chairman Chris Shores. It’s also confirmed that multiple Republican activists across the state have heard of this news, including this social media post.

First of all, as far as we can tell, Mrs. Dunbar is still living in the 6th Congressional District, but that did not stop her from the first time that she ran for Congress, or the second time, or the third time … but we digress. Rumors swirled that she was going to primary at least three members of the House of Delegates for the entire winter of 2019. There were also rumors that she has floated running for the 7th District seat and the United States Senate seat held by Mark Warner, but alas, it seems like she might have her sights set on Washington.

In 2008, Dunbar ran for Congress in Texas but dropped out before the primary election. She then divorced her husband, moved to Virginia, and started teaching at the Liberty University School of Law. In the early 2010s, she left Liberty, married again, and then started writing textbooks.

Then we get to her second and third congressional campaigns. Many will remember the countless hours that were spent by my colleagues and others exposing the efforts by Dunbar and her supporters manipulating two congressional campaigns. They included:

• Going on the payroll of the then 6th District GOP Chairman Scott Sayre
• Manipulating the election process
• Attempting to slate delegates
• Three Federal Election Commission complaints

Mrs. Dunbar was then defeated in the 2018 6th District GOP Convention. Two weeks later, Mrs. Dunbar announced she would run in the 5th District. She then came within one vote of winning. Thankfully, God had something else in mind and Denver Riggleman won the congressional nomination.

Denver Riggleman soundly defeated his Democratic opponent in 2018. He has moved on to Congress, been appointed to the Financial Services Committee, and has introduced multiple pieces of legislation. He has taken a codel to Isreal and has spoken on a bi-partisan panel at AIPAC. The Congressman also spoke out against Governor Northam’s actions and demanded his resignation. He doesn’t need a primary challenge.

Mrs. Dunbar still holds her seat on the Republican National Committee where she has gotten a few resolutions passed, mainly on divisive culture-war issues that middle America doesn’t understand or care to understand. She also signed a letter in support of Congressman Steve King. For those who don’t remember Mr. King, he was the person who made white supremacist remarks about “western civilization.” Yes, Virginia, Cynthia Dunbar supports an alleged white nationalist for Congress.

Mrs. Dunbar really doesn’t seem to care about what part of the Commonwealth she represents; it appears she just wants to be in power. Let’s hope she decides against running yet again.
