Governor Northam Confirms Controversial Photo
On Friday afternoon, a photo from Governor Northam’s personal page of his 1984 Eastern Virginia Medical School yearbook emerged. The photo was first published by Big League Politics, shortly after 2pm, and instantly went viral. It shows two men: one dressed in blackface and the other dressed in KKK garb.
Governor Northam has confirmed the photo’s authenticity but has not stated which one he is in the photo. He issued two apologies late last night. The first was a written statement in which he acknowledged the photo was “clearly racist and offensive.” The second was a video, reiterating his apology. In neither issuance did Northam tender his resignation, though many throughout the Commonwealth and nation have called on him to do so.
Hours after the photo above emerged, a second photo from Northam’s college years at Virginia Military Institute (VMI), in which Northam displays the nickname “Coonman” as part of his photo profile.
As of this morning, Governor Northam has not chosen to resign. There are rumors of a press conference to be held today, but that also has not happened yet. There is currently a growing crowd of people outside of the Governor’s mansion. If Northam does indeed resign, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax would become Governor. This scandal comes just a day after Northam’s disgraceful comments supporting post-birth abortion.
Stay tuned for the latest.
