Augusta County’s Dave Rexrode Named RGA Executive Director

Trixie Averill and Dave Rexrode obliged for my camera at RPV Reagan Dinner circa 2011.

Augusta County’s Dave Rexrode was named Thursday by the Republican Governors Association (RGA) as their new Executive Director, succeeding Paul Bennecke. Dave had been serving as RGA’s Political Director the past four years.

Back in 2001, Dave was graduating from James Madison University with a major in political science. That same year Staunton resident Chris Saxman had announced he was running for the newly created 20th House District, and he hired Dave as his campaign manager.

As one of the volunteers on the campaign, we worked with Dave delivering campaign signs, working local parades, phone banking, and everything else involved in helping to elect someone to public office. I particularly remember one summer day as Dave came by the house to bring signs or whatever, and we sat in the rocking chairs out front and talked politics. At the time I told him how nice it was to have someone to talk politics with because there weren’t many people in my immediate world who were politically involved in those days.

Dave’s office was in Chris and Michele’s basement in their home in Staunton. Their daughter Nora was about two at the time and Dave laughed talking about her crawling over his feet as he sat working at the desk. Now he has three kids of his own. In fact, he is now older than Chris was when he first ran in 2001.

Chris Saxman went on to win that election and served as my Delegate from 2002-10. I reached out to him about Dave’s new position and he was enthusiastic in his response. “Naturally, I’m thrilled for Dave,” he said, “but RGA is the real winner here. He ran my first campaign back in 2001 and it was one of the great professional experiences of my life. Even back then, I saw his dedication, teamwork, and leadership.”

Dave went on to run more campaigns, then became Executive Director of the Republican Party of Virginia while I was a member of RPV’s State Central Committee, and later became Deputy Campaign Manager for Bob McDonnell for Governor. He moved on to the Republican National Committee where he became National Coalitions Director, and ran 6th District Congressman Bob Goodlatte’s reelection campaign.

News of his new position brought kudos from others as well. RGA Chairman, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, noted that Dave had immense experience in electing Republican governors. “Dave,” he said, “is one of the top political strategists for our party, and his expertise will be a crucial asset to electing Republican governors and continuing the RGA’s standing as the most effective political organization in America.”

Dave’s official comment on and off the record expressed how privileged he felt with the new job. “I am honored to serve in this role, and I know that with hard work and determination, we can expand our majority and continue to elect governors who are dedicated to improving the lives of the people of their states. Republican governors are providing strong leadership, and I’m thankful to be given the opportunity to lead the best team in politics.”

The official RGA press release is below.

Congrats, Dave. You’ve come a long way from the days of sitting on my front porch talking politics. Best wishes for the future.

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Republican Governors Association announced today that RGA Political Director Dave Rexrode has been hired as the organization’s next Executive Director.

“Dave Rexrode has immense experience in electing Republican governors, and the RGA is fortunate to have such a bright and talented individual leading the organization,” said RGA Chairman Governor Pete Ricketts. “Dave is one of the top political strategists for our party, and his expertise will be a crucial asset to electing Republican governors and continuing the RGA’s standing as the most effective political organization in America.”

Rexrode will succeed outgoing RGA Executive Director Paul Bennecke, who has served in the role since 2014. Under Bennecke, the RGA increased its total to 34 Republican governors in 2017, tying the all-time high number of GOP chief executives.

“There is no one better suited for the job, and I’m thrilled to know that the RGA will be in good hands,” said outgoing RGA Executive Director Paul Bennecke. “Dave will take the RGA to a new level, lead the organization through the four-year cycle, and use his sound judgment to ensure Republican governors and candidates are in a strong position for victory.”

“I am honored to serve in this role, and I know that with hard work and determination, we can expand our majority and continue to elect governors who are dedicated to improving the lives of the people of their states,” said RGA Executive Director Dave Rexrode. “Republican governors are providing strong leadership, and I’m thankful to be given the opportunity to lead the best team in politics.”

Rexrode has served the RGA as its Political Director over the past four years, overseeing a political operation that raised and spent hundreds of millions of dollars. Prior to joining the RGA, Dave served as Executive Director of the Republican Party of Virginia, Deputy Campaign Manager for Bob McDonnell for Governor, National Coalitions Director for the Republican National Committee, and Campaign Manager for Congressman Bob Goodlatte.  Rexrode is a graduate of James Madison University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and public administration.
