Storrs: Majority of Sixth District Committee Votes to Not Support Nominee Ben Cline

By Craig Storrs

“… the days of resisting for the sake of resistance are over…”

“… after the dust settles and the ballots are cast, the entire District needs to come to work together…”

I occasionally enjoy hearing myself speak, but when I said those words to the Convention on May 19th, I wasn’t saying it to simply hear myself speak. I actually meant it.

On Saturday, June 23rd at the Sixth District Committee’s meeting, we learned the nature of the opposition’s resolve to stonewall Chairman Jennifer Brown.

The meeting was going smoothly. Then Ken Adams, the Waynesboro City Unit Chairman rose to speak and made a motion to allocate up to $30,000 of Committee funds to the legal defense of the former Chairman, the current and former Secretaries and Treasurer, and the Sixth District Committee as a whole. The motion also included instructions to retain the Bopp Law Firm out of Terra Haute, Indiana, as legal counsel, and to appoint Ken Adams and Matt Fitzgerald as the Committee’s sole representatives to the legal defense – cutting Jennifer Brown out of the loop altogether.

… and there went the meeting.

This motion was not made on the spur of the moment. Ken Adams came prepared and it was an attempt at an ambush. Like most people, I don’t like being ambushed.

I was outspoken in my vehement opposition to this motion:

Premature

The motion is incredibly premature. The FEC has not even begun an investigation, much less begun to litigate. They are merely requesting information.

Insurance

Scott Sayre and the Sixth District Committee are covered via the Republican Party of Virginia’s insurance for actions undertaken during their tenure. I wouldn’t expect the insurance to cover if they were actually negligent, however – if they legitimately haven’t done anything wrong, the RPV’s insurance and legal defense will cover them. What are they so worried about? Maybe it really is as Steve Kurtz, the Warren County Chairman, said: he just doesn’t trust the Republican Party of Virginia or John Whitbeck.

Willingness to Violate Bylaws

Speaking of Chairman Kurtz…

I have the audio recording if anyone would like to hear it. During the meeting we were discussing whether or not the motion violated the bylaws and Chairman Kurtz stated that the bylaws do not supersede a vote of the Committee … REALLY? I have a decade of parliamentary experience and I’ve never, until Saturday, heard someone with the gall to tell a Committee meeting that the bylaws simply don’t apply to their whims. That’s the entire reason bylaws exist.

Anne Fitzgerald and the Case of the Proxy

The meeting was one that had many proxies filed, two of which governed Anne Fitzgerald (SCC representative) and her husband, Matt Fitzgerald (Staunton City Chairman). Matt Fitzgerald was physically absent from the meeting, so he appointed Anne Fitzgerald as his proxy. Anne Fitzgerald was physically present at the meeting, but she appointed Tommy Moser as her proxy for her SCC seat.

Intent to Appeal

I’m pleased to announce that on June 26th I filed my appeal with the Sixth District Committee. Should the Sixth District Committee decide to overturn its decision and support my appeal, then it ends there and no further pursuit is needed. However, I fully expect my appeal to fail in the Sixth District Committee and I will make my intent clear here: I will appeal to State Central Committee.

In the days after the meeting, the outrage I’ve witnessed at the actions of the Sayre/Dunbar supporters has been astronomical. Make no mistake about it: the majority of the supporters of this motion were not supportive of our nominee, Ben Cline, during the convention and this motion appears to have been designed to prevent us from supporting our Congressional nominee in the middle of a general election, which rings hollow of a sore-loser mentality.

I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked: “Craig, why don’t you and Jennifer Brown work on seeing that these FEC complaints be dropped, then you won’t have to worry about spending the money.” Let me be clear: I will not interfere in this process. I will not run the risk of being accused of tampering with a potential federal investigation. If Scott Sayre, Cynthia Dunbar, Hud McWilliams, etc., are innocent of these accusations, the legal system will bear that out.

Time has come for a cleaning of the Sixth District’s house. It starts here.
