Five Campaigns Unite Behind Temporary Chair for 6th District Convention

A press release was issued Monday from five congressional campaigns in the 6th District urging the support of  Jack Wilson for Temporary Chairman at the May 19 convention. An independent temporary chair would help ensure that the convention nominates a Republican congressional candidate by a majority vote.

Earlier today, the campaigns of Ben Cline, Chaz Haywood, Ed Justo, Kathryn Lewis, and Doug Wright solidified their support of a fair and transparent convention by announcing a candidate to serve as Temporary Chairman of the Sixth District Convention on May 19th at JMU in Harrisonburg.

The five campaigns have united behind the election of 4th Congressional District Chairman Jack Wilson. Wilson, who successfully conducted the 2016 State Party Convention also held at JMU, has accepted the request of the five campaigns to stand for election as temporary chair.

The convention plan also calls for fair representation on committees and a traditional rules package that results in a candidate supported by a majority of convention delegates.

The campaigns released a joint statement supporting Jack Wilson:

“We must unite around a consensus candidate for temporary chairman that will ensure an open and fair convention process for delegates to select their nominee. We have concluded that Jack Wilson has the experience and the independence needed to ensure a fair, orderly, and unbiased convention for the Sixth Congressional District, and we support his election as temporary chairman on May 19th.”

This announcement comes on the heels of last week’s joint statement [1] in which the campaigns of Ben Cline, Chaz Haywood, Ed Justo, Kathryn Lewis, and Doug Wright committed to supporting a comprehensive convention plan in light of recent events that have raised concerns over fairness and transparency in the nominating process.

The campaigns will encourage their delegates to support Jack Wilson for Temporary Chairman and continue to call for traditional rules and fair representation on committees.

Scott Sayre, Cynthia Dunbar, and the majority of the 6th District Committee have selected Steve Albertson, of the Bull Elephant blog, to be temporary chairman.
