Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms Announced Resignation

Wednesday morning Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms announced his resignation as mayor of Virginia’s largest city, effective April 30, 2018.

Mayor Sessoms first served as an at large member on the Virginia Beach City Council in 1988. In 1993, he became the Vice Mayor for a period of 10 years. In 2008, Sessoms was elected Mayor and has held the post ever since.

As Mayor, Will Sessoms has prided himself on focusing on economic development of the Oceanfront and Town Center areas. He recently made a big push for the company Amazon to move to Virginia Beach, but Amazon declined.

Sessoms worked to bring the Cavalier back to prominence, as well as, develop the Virginia Beach Vibe District. He recently came out against offshore drilling on the coast of Virginia, worked to establish the first transoceanic fiber cable connections in the mid-Atlantic and developed Virginia Beach into a destination for businesses in the biomedical field.

In his announcement Mayor Sessoms thanked his supporters, family, and employees of Virginia Beach. He is leaving his post to pursue private sector endeavors.

It was rumored this morning before the announcement that he was taking a position in the Northam Administration. A spokesperson for the Governor said no post was offered. It is noted that Mayor Sessoms endorsed Republican Ed Gillespie in the Governor’s race last year.

With the resignation of Sessoms, the race to become the mayor of Virginia’s largest city is now underway.
