On Friday Governor Ralph Northam signed his first piece of legislation as governor, SB866 , that extended the license for Pioneer Community Hospital of Patrick County to December 31, 2018. The legislation, proposed by Republican Senator Bill Stanley, will allow efforts to continue for an operator to reopen the only hospital in the county, and offer local residents better access to critical health services.
Sen. Stanley’s bill originally was caught up in a political standoff and voted down after Senate Democrats demanded he vote for Medicaid expansion in exchange for their votes on the hospital. He refused and the bill died. However, the Governor stepped in , working and “convincing Democrats to support the measure and ushering the bill through on the second go-round.” Bearing Drift Senior Contributor Matt Hall wrote about this issue in January.
