This Article Is Not About Ryan Sawyers

Prince William County School Board Chairman At Large Ryan Sawyers would very much like to have this article written about how he has recently filed a lawsuit against the school board division’s attorney, Mary McGowan, Sawyers’ fourth or fifth lawsuit filing since taking office in January 2016. I’m sure he would enjoy the attention of having himself written about, even if the attention is negative, and even if I were to say, as many others are saying, that Sawyers is acting like a petulant child and wasting everyone’s time and money.

However, instead I am going to write about an inspirational young woman who is acting far more mature than our current School Board Chairman: Eleanor Sigrest.

At the time of her winning the 2015 Broadcom MASTERS Science Competition, Eleanor was an eighth-grader at Benton Middle School here in Prince William County. Her project, as she explains to the Today Show, compared research on nozzle size for cold gas rockets. Her win earned her $25,000 and a first place prize in the middle school division, out of 2,300 students from 28 participating states.

Eleanor represents everything that is going right with Prince William County Schools, and she is an inspiration for my own three little girls who would love to learn how to build rockets and someday visit Mars.

To hear her interview, and to see her joy and passion for the subject matter, gives me hope and excitement for the future of our County. I am thrilled that she is a student at our PWCS schools, and I know that for every Eleanor, there are many, many other incredible students (and teachers and administrators!) who are achieving exceptional things in our school division.

It is a dire shame that our school board Chairman isn’t focused more on Eleanor and the other students like her. I read the most recent lawsuit filed by Sawyers. In it, he says quite a bit about himself and his complaints. He spends several pages talking about emails (why is so much of politics about email lately?), and he spends several more pages attaching exhibits of what appear to be attorney-client privileged communications between himself and the school board’s attorney.

It remains to be seen what comes of Sawyers’ many, many litigations that are pending. But do you know the one thing he fails to mention in his lawsuit at all? Our kids. Prince William, we deserve better.

My congratulations to Eleanor for her excellent achievements and for the positive news she is providing about our school system and its world-class students and teachers. Eleanor, you are a role model for my kindergartner and first grader, and I will show them the video of your interview on the Today Show, and we will talk all about your passion for rocket science.

You will inspire them, I am sure, to build their own tiny versions of rockets from paper towel tubes and string. You will inspire them to work hard and never give up, so that someday, they too can follow you to Mars. You will inspire them, as you have inspired all of us, to dream big. Well done, Eleanor!  We are proud of you, and you represent the best of our Prince William County Schools.
