Snyder: Money Can’t Buy Ralph Love (or Passion from his Base)

By Pete Snyder

On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported California Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer is putting $2 million into the Virginia governor’s race for Ralph Northam. His group, NextGen America, joins Planned Parenthood and Virginia League of Conservation Voters PAC, in parachuting into Virginia to save Ralph Northam’s floundering campaign. Together, these liberal outside spending groups have dropped more than $6 million in Virginia’s gubernatorial race. And they’re just getting started.

Of course, all this outside liberal money doesn’t include the half a million dollars George Soros dumped into the Commonwealth during the Democratic primary, or the substantial donations Big Labor is handing over to the Democratic Governors Association for use in this race.

One thing is clear: these outside liberal groups are very nervous. They see Ralph Northam for what he is: a flailing candidate without substantive policy positions. One who simply cannot ignite the passion of the liberal base which now controls the Democrat party and their grassroots. A Lieutenant Governor who has failed to even show up for the job he has now. A candidate who sprinted to the far Left to win the primary and cannot return to the middle.

They aren’t even enthusiastic about Northam’s candidacy. The Washington Post itself noted Steyer, who opposes natural gas pipelines, “sighed when asked about how the gas pipelines affected his support for Northam” (The Washington Post, 8/22/17). Northam can’t go to a public event or even a debate without being heckled by anti-pipeline progressives. The lack of excitement, and unity, on the Democrats’ side is palpable. But the outside money is very, very real.

Virginia voters won’t be fooled by this influx of liberal outside spending. They recognize which candidate is acting as a puppet for the interests of national liberal groups and which candidate is running to implement policies to will benefit all Virginians. And they’ve of course seen it all before. In 2015 it was Michael Bloomberg dumping millions into State Senate races, yes STATE SENATE RACES, to try to tilt the chamber into Democratic hands. And in 2013 Steyer once again had is quadrennial interest in Virginia, pouring millions into the effort to elect Governor McAuliffe.

Ralph Northam is running a listless campaign — the Doc’s campaign doesn’t seem to have a heartbeat — all while advocating positions far to the left of the Virginia electorate, and no amount of money can change that. On the other hand, Ed Gillespie has remained true to who he is throughout the campaign, releasing detailed policy proposals, running to be a governor for ALL Virginians and taking his campaign to ALL Virginians, going a lot of places Republicans don’t usually go. All of this scares national Democrats. And that’s why they are backing up their Brinks trucks full of cash and unloading it all on our airwaves, in our mailboxes, and on our screens.

Put quite simply: backed by radical out-of-state liberal groups, Ralph Northam is running to be the leader of the Resistance, while Ed Gillespie is running to lead Virginia. The contrast is clear. And no amount of outside spending will be able to hide that basic truth.
