Today, President Donald Trump thought it would be a good idea to cast blame on “both sides” [1] for the violence in Charlottesville this weekend. He also went so far as to say that there were “very fine people” [2] in the white supremacist camp.
As you can imagine, a wide-array of repudiations, particularly from Democrats, have come forth.
And, despite all the equivocations or rationalizations that I know some are very tempted to make, I would like to quote Nancy Reagan: “Just say no!”
Here’s the deal: A deranged lunatic slammed his car into a crowd. It was an act of domestic terrorism spurred on by his Nazi sympathies.
End of story. That’s all that needs to be said.
No more explanations. No blame. No long discussion.
Just keep it simple, stupid.
“We condemn this act of terrorism by a white supremacist. There is no room for this kind of hatred in America. We mourn the loss of life and pray for their friends and families. I commit to supporting the city of Charlottesville with whatever resources they need in the wake of this violence and have instructed the justice department to support the Commonwealth of Virginia to ensure justice is served.”
When I heard about the moral equivalency of what Trump actually said, my gut reaction was that we are getting ready to go to war on the Korean peninsula, or we’re close to an economic crash, or maybe word got to the president that Articles of Impeachment are being drafted over Russia.
But we all know is there is no “wag the dog” distraction and none of those crises are happening to justify the president’s words.
Trump just can’t get over himself. I honestly have to wonder if it’s intentional anymore.
