Closing statements, with Gillespie focusing on Virginia, Northam focusing on federal issues.
FACT: @RalphNortham [1] is the only candidate in #VAGov [2] who has benefited from dark campaign money https://t.co/1zDdFMThFS [3] #VBADebate [4]

. @RalphNortham [1] Will you stop politicizing the tragedy at Virginia Tech? That's home for so many, including my wife. Leave Hokies alone.

It's hard for @RalphNortham [1] to discuss Virginia issues when he skips out on meetings that could have helped solve Virginia issues????? https://t.co/Mxx0UIG0mu [7]

WHEN IN THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO TALK ABOUT VIRGINIA INSTEAD OF FEDERAL ISSUES? #vbadebate [9] pic.twitter.com/APHsxJMlPL [10]

There is a question on the death penalty. Northan is against, Gillespie is for the death penalty. Gillespie pivots to the “sanctuary cities” and how he opposes them.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. @RalphNortham [1] gives the most ass-backward answer on pipelines. #vbadebate [9]

Easy to see why Dems don't want to give Ed G more debates. He's deft on stage. And really needs to create some openings in a tough year.

Gillespie asks Northam about his support Atlantic Coast Pipeline.
Is this a debate for Governor or U.S. Senate?

First 30 minutes of Qs at #VBAdebate [20] could easily be for US House race in CA. Would be nice if VAGov candidates were asked VA questions.

@JudyWoodruff [22] apparently thinks she is moderating debate about @realDonaldTrump [23]; waiting for a Virginia question. #VBAdebate [20] #fakequestions [24]

Gillespie on Northam's Trump attack: "What are you going to do? Call the White House and say pls put me through to the narcissistic maniac?"
— Graham Moomaw (@gmoomaw) July 22, 2017 [26]
The first Question is to Northam about Trump. Northam calls Trump a narcissistic maniac.

ITS ALMOST TIME!
Bearing Drift is live and on location from the marvelous Omni Homestead Resort in Bath County, VA. We are here for the first debate between Republican nominee Ed Gillespie and Democratic nominee Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam.
This should be a spirited debate. I have spoken with Gillespie and Republican Governor’s Association staffers, who are exceedingly confident in their candidate. They have promised an exciting debate!
Please follow me @MattColtHall [35] on Twitter to keep up with the debate. I will do my best to update this article throughout the day. The hastag is #vbadebate and the debate is being livestreamed on PBS.
Thank you for choosing Bearing Drift for all your conservative media in Virginia!
