Sen. John McCain Diagnosed With Brain Cancer – Updated

Sad news Wednesday evening as the world learns that Arizona’s senior Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a very aggressive brain cancer.

The 80-year-old had been operated on last week for a blood clot over his eye, according to the news released to the public, and the senator was at home in Arizona recuperating.

From Web MD:

Glioblastoma tumors are usually highly malignant, or cancerous. These are grade 4 tumors, which means they can grow fast and spread quickly. Glioblastoma tumors make their own blood supply, which helps them grow. It’s easy for them to invade normal brain tissue.

Symptoms: Because glioblastomas grow quickly, pressure on the brain usually causes the first symptoms. Depending on where the tumor is, it can cause persistent headaches, seizures, vomiting, trouble thinking, changes in mood or personality, double or blurred vision, and trouble speaking.

My friend Debbie was in her 50s when she developed the same type of brain tumor four years ago. It began when she crossed words and sometimes had difficulty verbalizing what she was thinking, and a visit to a doctor revealed glioblastoma.

Thinking about her difficulty sometimes in speaking made me remember the James Comey hearing in early June and John McCain’s bizarre questioning of the former FBI director that raised many eyebrows.

It was later explained away by McCain himself when he released a statement that included, “maybe going forward I shouldn’t stay up late watching the Diamondbacks night games.”

Debbie went through brain surgery and did well immediately following but then began to again fade. Two years after her diagnosis, she was gone.

In 2014 Brittany Maynard, 29, made the news when she took her life after a diagnosis of glioblastomas made her determined to control her final days.

Senator Ted Kennedy and Vice President Joe Biden’s son Beau suffered from the same cancer.

Prayers go out to Senator McCain, truly an American hero, and his family.
