Schoeneman, Kenney to Depart Virginia Line Media

Mitchell to Serve as Executive Editor of Bearing Drift, Sili as Interim Editor of the Jeffersonaid

Chesapeake, VA:  Today, Virginia Line Media LLC, the parent group of Virginia’s leading political websites BearingDrift.com and The Jeffersoniad, announced the departure of two of its founding members, Brian Schoeneman and Shaun Kenney.  Schoeneman served as Editor-in-Chief of Bearing Drift and VLM General Counsel as well as a member of the board, and Kenney served as a member of the board while leading The Jeffersoniad as Editor-in-Chief.

“It’s hard to overstate the impact Shaun and Brian have had on Virginia politics over the last decade.  Their writing and advocacy has had a major impact here in Virginia, and they have helped to keep BearingDrift.com and our other properties some of the most read, most followed sites in Virginia politics,” said Publisher Jim Hoeft, who founded BearingDrift.com in 2004.  “Our sites wouldn’t be what they are today without Shaun and Brian, and their contributions will be missed.”

Schoeneman, a lawyer who represents a maritime labor union in Washington, DC, will be retiring from online commentary.  Kenney, a political consultant and former chair of the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors as well as former Executive Director of the Republican Party of Virginia, will be moving on to other publishing opportunities.  Schoeneman joined the site in 2010, and Kenney in 2008.  Both were founding members of Virginia Line Media in 2011.

“I want to thank Jim, Shaun, Scott and the rest of the contributors at BearingDrift.com and our other sites for everything they’ve done for me over the last decade,” said Schoeneman. “It’s been an honor to serve as Editor-in-Chief, and I am proud of the work that we have done on the site over the years.  I’m looking forward to taking a step back from online politics for a while,” he said.  Schoeneman will be officially leaving BearingDrift.com as of July 12, his 40th birthday.

“During the rise of social media, the best and most talented of Virginia’s political writers have come to Bearing Drift to express their thoughts candidly and without censorship,” said Kenney.  “As print media continues to evolve in an era of digital media, the line between blogger and reporter has blurred to the point where only the medium distinguishes the two.  As other columnists and writers follow in Bearing Drift’s wake, one cannot help but be proud of what Brian and the rest of the VLM board has accomplished on behalf of Virginia’s public square.”

Lynn Mitchell, who currently serves as photo editor for BearingDrift.com and has been a presence as part of Virginia’s online media for the past decade, has been named Executive Editor of BearingDrift.com.  Melissa Kenney, VLM’s advertising manager, will join the VLM Board, alongside Jason Kenney, VLM’s web developer, who joined the Board earlier this year.  Susan Sili will serve as interim Editor for The Jeffersoniad.

Virginia Line Media LLC, founded in 2011, is the parent company that owns BearingDrift.com and The Jeffersoniad websites as well as The Score and Virginia Politics on Demand podcasts.  VLM is a leader in bringing activist driven conservative news and commentary to Virginia.
