Hampton Roads LG Debate Recap

This past Saturday, the three Republican candidates for Lieutenant Governor met in the final Hampton Roads debate before the June 13th primary at Charlie Daniels Racing in Isle of Wight County.

The questions from Bearing Drift’s own Jim Hoeft and a panel of journalists, as well as some from voters on social media, focused largely on the economy, transportation, the role of the Lieutenant Governor, and infrastructure. For a campaign that has had its share of headlines for anything but the issues (and does anyone really want to hear the word “email” ever again after 2016?) this was actually a substantive discussion about the issues mentioned above and how the candidates propose to address them.

Delegate Glenn Davis (Va Beach) had somewhat of a “home field advantage” with the audience mainly being from the adjacent Tidewater area. For what it’s worth, he also won the sign war that campaigns like to engage in at events like this. He wasn’t afraid of the critiques he faced for supporting infrastructure bills such as former Governor Bob McDonnell’s plan, explaining the importance of improving roads and public transportation and how those tie into the economy and jobs across the state, particularly in Hampton Roads. Davis, as usual, stuck to his points about job creation in general. Indeed, jobs and the economy proved to be the predominant theme of the day for all three candidates.

Senator Bryce Reeves, who hasn’t seemed to particularly enjoy the two debates I’ve seen him in, emphasized his background as a veteran and law enforcement officer. He was certainly happy to discuss the fact that every female Republican legislator in the General Assembly has endorsed him, a development that can’t possibly have gone unnoticed at Vogel HQ. He also defended his recent national security ad and expressed support for exploring offshore drilling and using the revenue produced by that to help fund infrastructure improvements.

Senator Jill Vogel, in keeping with the main theme of the day, also had a great deal to say regarding the economy in Virginia. In terms of transportation issues, she proposed reassessing budget priorities and reforming VDOT. Vogel also highlighted her recent endorsement from pro-gun group VCDL, and emphasized her career as an ethics attorney, proposing banning gifts to elected officials in that vein.

The general consensus among the audience members I spoke with was that none of the three candidates said anything that harmed themselves, and they were glad to see the debate stick to a discussion about issues and policies rather than devolving into the personal attacks and petty nonsense that has sadly become all too expected in politics. Time, what little of it is left, will tell whether this trend in the Lieutenant Governor race will continue as we wind down to just over a month to go until the primary.
