Congressional Statements On Repealing ObamaCare

The House of Representatives narrowly voted 217-213 to pass H.R. 1628, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) today.

In their own words….

Congressman Morgan Griffith (Yes):

“I voted in support of the repeal and replacement of the failed health insurance program known as Obamacare. The new bill guarantees everyone has access to health insurance. The bill sets up a system with choices instead of mandates and will lower costs over time, making care for all more affordable. A piece of paper saying you have health insurance does not mean you can always afford healthcare.”

“Americans overwhelming voted to undo the burdens of Obamacare, and this bill delivers. Furthermore, it will not allow insurers to deny those who do not have access to health insurance through their employer, on the basis of pre-existing conditions.”

“This bill is our best chance to offer more choices, eliminate taxes, lower skyrocketing premiums, and bring down deductibles so families can get the healthcare they need.”

“The replacement bill is far better than the system we have now, called Obamacare, but that does not mean it is perfect. And there is much more to do to guarantee Americans a system that gives them both access and choices about their healthcare. Choices that families want and need, instead of mandates from the federal government in Washington.”

Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (No):

“Healthcare is a very personal life and death issue. My goals on healthcare reform are to provide patient-centered reforms that provide better access to high quality, affordable care and covers preexisting conditions without lifetime limits. I did not support the AHCA today because the many uncertainties in achieving those goals. As the process moves forward I hope that we can continue to work together to fix our broken healthcare system. We have seen over the past year more bad news of skyrocketing premiums, rising deductibles, and fewer choices for millions of American families. The status quo is unsustainable and we need to find real solutions for the American people.”

Congressman Bob Goodlatte (Yes):

“Obamacare is collapsing. Just yesterday, Aetna announced that it will leave Virginia’s Obamacare insurance marketplace, leaving 27 counties with only one insurer to pick from in 2018. Iowans are on the verge of having no insurers participating in the marketplace next year at all. In Arizona, insurance premiums are set to increase by more than 100 percent. From dwindling choices and higher premiums and deductibles to the loss of access to doctors, it’s easy to see why this mess of big government mandates and regulations has failed so many families.

“The time to act is now. The American Health Care Act is Congress’ opportunity to fix the health insurance system and put patients back in charge of their health care. The AHCA expands health savings accounts, giving patients more options of how to spend and save their hard-earned money. This bill also protects life by blocking funding for Planned Parenthood and directing that funding instead to Community Health Centers, like the ones serving many communities in the Sixth District. And most importantly, despite what you’ve read online or heard on the news, under the AHCA no one can be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. In fact, new protections are included in the AHCA for these individuals.

“The status quo cannot continue when we know that we as a nation can do better. I told my constituents that I would stand for them to repeal Obamacare, and I intend to keep that promise. Passing the American Health Care Act is the first step in repealing Obamacare and ensuring Americans have access to affordable health care.”

Senator MarK Warner (No, when it comes up in the Senate):

“Instead of working with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act, today Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to take away healthcare coverage from millions of Americans. This bill would raise costs for seniors, hang 3.4 million Virginians with preexisting conditions out to dry, and shift hundreds of millions of dollars in costs for Medicaid services to states, impacting care for pregnant women, seniors and the disabled.

“This was a bad bill a month ago, and it’s a worse bill now. I will fight tooth and nail to keep it from passing the Senate.”

Update:

Congressman Dave Brat (Yes):

“There is no debate that Obamacare is failing under its own weight. Too many Virginia families on Obamacare have seen double-digit premium increases year after year. Just this week Virginia saw another health insurance provider exit the marketplace due to skyrocketing prices, reducing the choices available to Virginia families.

My yes vote today was about keeping the promise I made to my constituents to work towards lowering health care costs. While the AHCA does not fully repeal Obamacare as I had hoped, it is an important step towards reducing premiums and returning health care decision-making back to the American people. The AHCA rolls back Obamacare mandates and repeals economy crippling taxes while maintaining basic protections for those with pre-existing conditions.

Our work is not done. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to improve the bill. And I remain committed to fully repealing Obamacare.”
