VPOD: John Adams, GOP Nominee, Virginia Attorney General

John Adams, an attorney in Chesterfield, who is also a former federal prosecutor, supreme court clerk, and Naval officer, has secured the Republican nomination for Virginia attorney general and will challenge Democrat incumbent Mark Herring for the position this November.

Adams joins the podcast to talk about the nature of the office, how he feels Herring has abused the office, and what his goals are for being an effective attorney general.

“Virginia is a sovereign state and that sovereign state needs a lawyer to run the Office of Attorney General and represent the state’s sovereign interests,” said Adams. “You can’t use that office to enforce your view as the the way you’d like the world to be.” Adams believes that Herring has that view and would have served the commonwealth better remaining in the state senate.

Adams also would like to take head-on crime and the heroin/opioid crisis in Virginia. He said his goal is to keep Virginians safe and to coordinate with the Federal government when possible. He will also form, in addition to an Opioid Policy Team, a policy team to look into corruption in local government. He said sometimes the local commonwealth’s attorney might be too close to the issue and the problem might escape the watch of the federal government, so it would be up the state to serve as a monitor.

We also had a little fun with history.

In a recent podcast with Clay Jenkinson, the humanitarian and historical scholar who portrays Thomas Jefferson, “Jefferson” says (at 41:10):

“A descendant of the 2nd President of the United States, John Adams, is going to attempt to become attorney general of the Commonwealth of Virginia? First of all, I don’t believe it. The Adams’ are New Englenders; they’re Calvinists. They don’t understand Virginia. Adams loved Washington and he admired me, but he looked down on Virginia as a slave-holding state full of white men who were haughty and squires in sort of the English tradition. He said every Virginia goose is a swan. So, I doubt any Adams really could enjoy living in the lush climate of Virginia and, if an Adams comes, I hope you will not consider electing such a person because he’s almost certainly a crypto-Federalist and there is no place in Virginia for Federalists.”

Adams took exception to Jefferson’s comments, noting that he was born and raised in Virginia. Attended VMI and Mr. Jefferson’s UVA. Served in the Navy in Hampton Roads and clerked for the Supreme Court while living in Northern Virginia. But, he did demur a little.

“If another Virginian is going to smack you around, Thomas Jefferson is the one to do it!”
