Senator Jill Vogel on Lobby Day, Talking about Legislation and Her Campaign

It was a distinct honor interviewing friend and candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Senator Jill Vogel. As most of our readers know, in my personal capacity I have endorsed Senator Vogel in her campaign, organized a campaign tour, and promoted her on social media for almost a year. However, I did not expect to receive such an honor as the one at General Assembly.

Last week, I met Jill on the steps of the Virginia State Capitol. My only expectation was to say hello and remind her that I was coming to her office later in the day for an interview. However, Senator Vogel proceeded to take me through the Capitol as her VIP.

The first thing we did was go to the Senate floor. We didn’t just go into the gallery; she escorted me right onto the Senate Floor. I was even able to take a picture in her Senate seat.

To be honest, it’s difficult to find the right adjective to explain what it was like being escorted on the Senate floor. It has to be something comparable to football fans going to the Super Bowl, or rock and roll fans attending a Rolling Stones concert. My heart fluttered as we walked around the Senate floor, knowing this was one of the chambers of the oldest legislative body in the country.

As if it couldn’t possibly get better, I was quickly whisked to the Senate gallery before the start of the Senate session. Expecting to just watch session like the rest of the attendees in the gallery, much to my surprise Senator Vogel bestowed the honor of being introduced to the full Senate of Virginia.

It was a very ceremonious and honorable procedure. Each Senator introduces their guest by name to the full Senate, then gives a brief biography of that person, then commends them for their involvement in the community. Afterward, the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia asks the person to stand in the gallery to be recognized. Lieutenant Governor Northam then addresses the guests of the Senator as the audience applauds.

Senator Vogel was very kind to note my involvement reporting for this site, and to thank Bearing Drift for the political writing that we do to keep our legislators accountable. There was nothing sweeter than hearing Ralph Northam talk about Bearing Drift. It was an amazing, unforgettable day.

Enjoy my interview with Senator Jill Vogel.
