BREAKING: Dave Brat Lies About Pro-Life Record in Anti-Bearing Drift Screed

There’s not much more we dislike here at Bearing Drift than being called liars or accused of writing hit pieces.

We dislike when those calling us such names respond with lies.  But that just happened.

Rep. Dave Brat responded to our earlier Bearing Drift expose on his flip-flopping on multiple questions on the National Pro Life Alliance survey.  His response? We’re a bunch of liars doing a hit job on him, and he answered the National Pro Life Alliance survey with the exact same answers as in 2014.

Small problem?   That is absolutely not true.

Brat’s response this evening sounds unequivocal in his defense:

With respect to my National Pro-Life Alliance candidate survey, the author of the piece cites my survey responses only, while ignoring all of my comments that were provided in an attachment. The comments explain the constitutional basis for my positions. As a matter of note, this is the same survey that I completed in 2014, where I answered all questions in the same way, with attached comments.

Apparently, that “constitutional basis” changed quite significantly while he was in Washington.

Here’s the 2014 survey.    In 2014, Brat supported bans on sex-selective abortions (4), supported parental consent (1) and supported a 48 hour cooling off counseling period (2) — all changed in 2016.  Brat’s neutrality on RU-486 in 2014 moved to a negative (6) in 2016.

In short?  Brat lied.

Below are screenshots of the 2014 and 2016 survey.  Note that the questions did not change… merely Dave Brat’s answers:

Brat responds further that his answers were the same answers Donald Trump gave during the debate.  Small problem with that as well — Trump answered the survey perfectly: Y in every instance with no prevarication.

Yet even if one accepts the idea that Brat doesn’t believe the federal government should involve itself in any question regarding the defense of human life?  Then Brat would have answered each question as he did the question as to whether or not he would vote for the Human Life Amendment — leaving it blank.

No other way to spell this one out, folks.

As an aside, it’s a tad bit hypocritical for Dave Brat to refer to us as people “supposedly on [the Republican] side” when he has spent that last few months of his book tour attacking other Republicans.  But, I disgress.

Brat makes it clear that his position did not change from one survey to the next, nor did his rationale.  It is readily apparent that neither his responses, his rationale, nor his consistency bears a resemblance to how he actually responded.

Before you start calling us liars, Congressman, better make sure your own story checks out.  We call that ethics in the real world, professor.

  • Lest anyone think there’s daylight here among the editors, think again.

  • Turbocohen

Guys, Really? I Stand with Pro Life Dave Brat.

    • Turbo, look at the facts here. You can stand with Dave all you want – that’s your prerogative.

But we called him on bad answers on the 2016 survey, and he called us liars, then said that his 2014 survey was exactly the same. That wasn’t true.

At this point, how can you trust anything he says. I mean, seriously. The guy who has spent the whole year complaining about Paul Ryan and other Republicans is now somehow angry that Republicans are holding him accountable for what he does?

      It’s absurd.

    • YGtrece

Do u stand with Pro Choice Dave Brat as well

      • YGtrece

I stand with less taxes Hillary Clinton. Only issue is, that’s not who she is

    • Say what you will, but his “standard” was no standard at all if it changes in a mere two years. Facts are, Brat can’t bring himself to vote for parental consent and against sex-selective abortions.

Says all pro-lifers need to know.

  • Mike Dobozy

Look, I enjoy BD in general, your writing specifically, and I’ve got no love for Dave Brat. But… since I started following BD, I’ve read “Virginia’s Most Useless Congressman Strikes Again”, “It Writes a Book; It Gets the Hose Again” (quote: “…his ghostwriter is feverishly attempting to put some substance in the empty suit with pithy one liners and deeply moving and profound insights hovering somewhere between Joel Osteen and Hallmark greeting cards.”), and “Dave Brat Would Have A Pretty Hate Machine…”, a post in which you’ve got a picture that’s a pastiche of him and Nancy Pelosi and in which you describe him as a failure of cataclysmic proportions that may or may not seek advice from something called “Dog of Wisdom”. I think the guy can be forgiven for thinking that BD is the… occasional source of criticism that veers beyond the political. 🙂

    • We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – when he does his job, we won’t have to hold him accountable. Until then, somebody has to.

      • YGtrece

Seems kinda personal at this point tho. Much as I agree that he’s self serving and kiiiiiiiiiiinda weaselly, VA has a lot of interesting GOP characters, the jury has been out on Brat for a while. Some stories play out enough on their own

        • Sure, it’s personal. When we get called liars, it tends to become personal. This is Virginia, after all. There is still some southern gentility left in our DNA.

          • YGtrece

            I hear ya

        • Personal because it is true?

Let’s be honest here… despite satire, the comical, conjecture, anecdote, evidence, and then actually catching the man flip-flopping on something as basic and core as the right to life — there is literally nothing that will shake a handful of fanatical true believers… up to and including lines such as “well no one is perfect” and “we have to accept that folks might not agree with us all the time.”

Lines that none of them uttered in 2014. Ever.

Folks have repeated for the better part of a decade that the “weak sisters” in the Virginia Senate stuffed pro-life bills in the graveyard (Senate Ed and Health Committee) with purpose and intent. When one of their staffers — who shares their beliefs and ideas to the point of “mentorship” — rises to power, why is it so incredible that this individual reflects the very same values?

Dave Brat is not pro-life. Is “standard” for his position self-evidently changed in the course of a handful of months — and is evidenced.

Support him on any myriad of issues that mean something to you, by all means… but on life, on taxes, on good government? Brat radically fails on all three.

      • Mike Dobozy

No problem there – he does seem to have changed his answers between 2014 and 2016 (even when accounting for the addendum), and this is an issue that you all feel strongly about, so more power to you. But BD also seems interested in pursuing the high road, and the high road ain’t paved with snark and personal insults. Wonkette holds people accountable too, but my guess is that you all aim higher than that.

        • If you’ve got a polite way to respond to someone who called us a liar while lying in their response – let me know.

          • Mike Dobozy

Sure, and I understand that you’re taking this accusation personally (as well you should). A person’s word is worth more than anything they own. Still, all of the posts that I mentioned were written well before Brat called you a liar. I’m not saying that you all shouldn’t defend yourselves with vigor; I’m saying that the point at which you can rationally claim to be offended by name calling and threats to southern gentility is in the rear view mirror.

          • If this is what it takes to sting Brat into paying attention to somebody other than his fawning sycophants, then this is what we have to do.

          • Mike Dobozy

C’est la guerre, then. Like I said, I understand and sympathize with your frustration. Your word was impugned; a firm response is justified. Still, my humble $0.02: a fulsome supply of snark – cathartic as it may be – and referring to his supporters as obsequious sycophants might not be an effective way to get your point across, to him or to them. Something about kindness being strength and anger blowing out the lamp of the mind and the arguments of malice and all that.

          • That doesn’t work with these people.

          • Mike Dobozy

            Sorry to hear that.

          • Lee Pillsbury

Ron Hedlund has called him out on Facebook. It appears that the Congressman was less than forthcoming in his explanation. When the original Brat packer is confused and concerned the Congressman has a problem.

      • Peacemaker

What is funny and sad at the same time…Unless you’re a Brat fan, you can’t post on his Facebook page. His ego can’t let the rest of the 700k people he is supposed to represent actually give their opinion. He’ll block you. Ha!

  • David Eggleston

Brat lied, and babies died. Sorry. Couldn’t resist. Ron, you can have that one for free.

  • Peacemaker

Shaun, Please explain the problem with a “Calvinist Catholic” to the Brat. It’s really…(I’m going to let you opine on that one…You’ll handle it better than I ever could).
Almost as offensive as most of his answers…and I am not ANYWHERE near as pro- life as most of you. But Sex Selection? Really? NO to parental notification, Really? Hell, I totally oppose the first and support the latter and those are only two. What a jackass.
