Comstock, Whitbeck, Gillespie, and Wittman Show Leadership in Denouncement of Trump, While Brat and Stewart Embarrass Virginians

So unless you are living under a rock, by now you have seen the video where Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump referred to women in a demeaning manner. It’s not surprising to many of us that Mr. Trump has the morality of an alley cat, and refers to women like he imagines high school football players talk about girls in locker rooms. However, Barbara Comstock is not going to stand for it.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Congresswoman Comstock (VA-10) swiftly and expertly denounced Donald Trump.

“This is disgusting, vile, and disqualifying. No woman should ever be subjected to this type of obscene behavior and it is unbecoming of anybody seeking high office. In light of these comments, Donald Trump should step aside and allow our party to replace him with Mike Pence or another appropriate nominee from the Republican Party. I cannot in good conscience vote for Donald Trump and I would never vote for Hillary Clinton.”

In additional to Congresswoman Comstock, 2017 gubernatorial candidates Ed Gillespie and Congressman Rob Wittman were quick with their denouncements.  RPV Chairman John Whitbeck also chimed in with his disapproval.

“Donald Trump’s recorded comments are incredibly offensive and demeaning,” Gillespie wrote in a text message to The Post. “All people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”

Republican Party of Virginia Chairman John Whitbeck.

“Women should never be the subject of comments like this. Ever,” Whitbeck texted.”

And Congressman Wittman in the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

“Wittman “does not condone the objectification of women under any circumstances,” said Farahn Morgan, the congressman’s communications director.

“He is a father and a grandfather and has a reputation in Congress as a leader in creating professional opportunities for women. Many of the leadership roles in his office are currently filled by women, and both of the chiefs of staff who have served in his office have been female.”

Some Virginians said nothing.  They know who they are, and they will have to explain why they didn’t take a stand someday.  However, some Virginia Republicans decided to show zero respect towards woman and either say “Trump isn’t a saint” or even worse “Bill Clinton did it too!” Of course, the two perpetrators are  Virginia’s Most Useless Congressman (Dave Brat) and Virginia’s Embarrassment (Corey Stewart).

Let us begin with the useless one, shall we?

Congressman Dave Brat released a statement to the NBC affiliate in Richmond stating this:

“Donald Trump’s comments are crude and I reject them totally. We all have an obligation to work every day to make sure that our language is precise and lifts everyone up at all times. This week I spoke at Glen Allen High School and that was the substance of my message; that we must lift each other up and be kind to the person sitting next to us because life is hard enough as it is without putting others down.

It’s also important that we get the ethics right. As someone who attended seminary, I have made clear throughout all of my campaigns that we live in an age of ethical breakdown and one irony of this breakdown is that it appears the Republican side is held to an ethical standard that the left and Democrat candidates never have to face. I am proud that Republicans do believe in ethics and make our positions clear at every turn. The left and the press is now in full attack mode claiming that Trump’s unethical remarks are disqualifying for the presidency, but that same ethical standard was not to be found when a sitting president acted out even more crudely in the Oval Office.

The good news –and there is always good news– is that there is an intrinsic moral goodness in the American people and I trust them to assess the comprehensive and systematic worldviews and talents and leadership abilities of the candidates when they go to the ballot box in November.”

By the way, claiming that “Bill Clinton did it too,” is kind of like claiming that you can be a murderer and be morally superior because Jack the Ripper murdered more people than you. Also, I thought that Bill had already served his two terms and is not on the ballot this year? We can’t expect spouses to always be accountable for the others actions. But, I digress.

Then we get to the one who REALLY stepped into a big pile of, well let’s just call it what President Reagan called, “[the] stuff Bess Truman tried to get Harry to call fertilizer for 35 years.”

Virginia’s Embarrassment (please consult BD editor Brian Schoeneman for the trademark on that term, he thought of it first) had this to say in the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

“Asked about the condemnation of Trump by Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, Stewart, called them “establishment pukes” and said they want Democrat Hillary Clinton to win.

“What do you expect from the Republican establishment,” said Stewart, at large chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. “They want him to lose and they want the other establishment candidate — Hillary Clinton, to win.”

Stewart said the economy “is heading into the gutter and we’re supposed to vote for president based on some locker room statements by Mr. Trump? I think people are smarter than that.

“He’s not an angel — he’s not a pope. We’re voting for president of the United States. When we nominated him we knew he wasn’t a saint, but he’s probably the only person who can change its direction.”

Let me remind Mr. Trump, Congressman Brat, and Supervisor Stewart of the words of our 33rd President, Harry S. Truman. One of President Truman’s daughters was a singer. She sang in Washington D.C. one night and a music critic wrote a scathing critique of her vocal ability. President Truman responded with a letter to this music critic saying:

“Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you’ll need a new nose.”

Let me put it this way. If someone ever talked about my wife the way Mr. Trump did, they wouldn’t need a new nose. They might need a new face.  And, of course, we live in a different time, where Truman’s note today would be attacked as inciting violence.  But the sentiment remains.

We have to stop making excuses for Mr. Trump’s actions. Mr. Trump needs to spend the next month acting like the leader of the free world, not worrying about what video might be published next. We need to recognize that this was a mistake, apologize, and move on.

It is my hope that Mr. Trump’s measured debate performance last night will hopefully calm this election down. Make no mistake, this was a mistake of epic proportions. However, I do believe it is something that the GOP can move on from.
