It’s Official: Snyder Declines 2017 Run, Endorses Gillespie

The speculation ends.

Virginia businessman and former 2013 lieutenant governor contender Pete Snyder has declined to throw his hat in the ring for statewide office in 2017, thus ending months of speculation as to whether Snyder would shake things up for the GOP nomination for either governor or lieutenant governor:

From the Gillespie campaign:

“I’m incredibly honored to have Pete’s endorsement. We’ve been great friends for a long time, and his selfless action today makes it much more likely our party will win our statewide races next year. Pete has spent years traveling Virginia, listening to voters, studying the issues facing our Commonwealth, and putting forward positive solutions. His support of my efforts is an incredibly positive early development that helps lay the groundwork for victory next year.

“Like all Virginia Republicans, Pete and I are both focused on the presidential and congressional campaigns for the next 39 days. But I’m looking forward to his playing a major role in my gubernatorial campaign after that, and grateful he’s ‘all in.’ His success as an entrepreneur will be helpful in formulating policies to get Virginia growing again, and creating good-paying jobs in every region of our Commonwealth.”

So that’s two profiles in courage we have so far: Obenshain for stepping aside and allowing the GOP’s strongest card to be played, and Snyder for making sure that Virginia Republicans “stay in their lane” and win for 2017.

Frankly, how often do you see this in politics?  99 times out of 100, an ambitious politician will see the opening and take it.  In three instances, you have Virginia Republicans starting to figure it out — first Gillespie for stepping up after an exhaustive near-run-thing against what at the time was arguably Virginia’s most popular elected official (Warner) in 2014, then Obenshain for stepping aside to give Gillespie the open shot at the Governor’s Mansion, and now Snyder — rising star — not only stepping aside but throwing in?

Pretty refreshing to see after a near decade of power grabbing and infighting on so-called “principles” — creating an environment which has forfeited all 5 statewide offices to the Democrats and denied Virginia Republicans a statewide win for almost seven years.

That really is the lesson here.  Finally, one sees the grown-ups starting to sort things out as professionals, not as backstabby politicians.  Snyder certainly helps set the standard for excellence in this regard.

Who says the Virginia Way is dead?

UPDATE: The Washington Post offered some brief thoughts:

Snyder had been widely discussed as a potential candidate for governor, lieutenant governor or the U.S. Senate in 2017 because of his strong showing in the GOP nomination contest for lieutenant governor in 2013. He placed second that year in a crowded field.

“I am not going to be running for office in 2017, for any office,” Snyder told The Washington Post on Wednesday. “I’m going to turn my focus on making sure Republicans up and down the ballot win in November and also next year. And that’s why I’m going to put a particular focus on the Virginia gubernatorial race and endorse my good friend and strong conservative Ed Gillespie.”

…which doesn’t mean that Snyder will not be discussed widely as a U.S. Senate candidate for 2018.
