Clinton Falls Flat

The speech by Hillary Clinton last night was a bunch of bromides and platitudes.

In a comment I left on Lynn’s excellent post, I hope I share many of your views: it’s historic that a woman has been nominated to one of the major party candidacies for president…I just wish it wasn’t Hillary who gets that honor.

Without rehashing the speech, which you certainly can find in multiple places, Clinton sets out a laundry list of ideas that we all would LOVE to see implemented (isn’t that typical). But she also fails to deliver in reality (isn’t that also typical?).

While we all might want to be critical of Mr. Trump for delivering a dour dose of reality last Thursday, maybe it’s that sort of wake-up call our country needs?

What was Clinton’s response to illegal immigration? Amnesty and a better economy – so that there are more jobs for everyone! How did she address national security? More of the same.

Trump’s response, then, was unsurprising:

“Hillary Clinton talks about unity, about E Pluribus Unum, but her globalist agenda denies American citizens the protections to which they are all entitled – tearing us apart. Her radical amnesty plan will take jobs, resources and benefits from the most vulnerable citizens of the United States and give them to the citizens of other countries. Her refusal to even say the words ‘Radical Islam’, or to mention her disaster in Libya, or her corrupt email scheme, all show how little she cares about the safety of the American people.”

Clinton’s speech was a laundry list of cliches we’ve heard time and again – reaching out to coal miners (while simultaneously wishing their industry dead); talking up the automobile industry (while supporting trade deals that kneecap it); discussing how America’s economy can be great…if only we allowed illegal immigrants legal status.

Mrs. Clinton also spoke of “women’s healthcare rights” to perhaps the loudest ovation of the night from the gaggle in Philadelphia. I have heard strange rumblings about how Trump might be “authoritarian” during this campaign…but I doubt during the nearly forty years of Mrs. Clinton’s political participation, Trump has, like her, more than 50 million lives on his hands due to the advocacy of “women’s healthcare” – code for abortion on-demand.

But perhaps the most annoying portion of the speech was when in a night of unity Clinton failed to mention “We the People” once, despite numerous allusions to our founders. Instead, she decided to go with a quote from the musical, “Hamilton.” My daughter got the reference immediately and cringed. I had no idea…and, quite frankly, still have no idea…what the heck she was saying. But my daughter said it was a play to the young voter…and a very bad one.

It certainly was a cringeworthy speech. Sure, Trump laid out a vision of the world that is dangerous and in need of some change. Clinton gave us a speech that, in essence, is the same laundry list of Democrat wishes that we have heard since at least William Jennings Bryan. The reality is her message was stale and flat. Which means she might be campaigning as long as Bryan for the presidency too.
