Whitbeck steps in it, again

Let’s journey for a moment to the wilds of Fairfax county, where it strongly appears as though recently installed RPV chairman John Whitbeck has made a serious blunder.

It comes in the form of what looks, for all the world, like an endorsement of one of the three candidates for the open Board of Supervisors seat, John Guevera. It’s being spun in the usual places as “support” for Mr. Guevera’s candidacy and the candidate himself sees it as boost, saying “Those kind words from Mr. Whitbeck will certainly help to energize our team through the stretch run to Election Day.”

When questioned on this matter, Mr. Whitbeck retreated into a legalistic crouch. He never saw the Guevara campaign’s press release and he instructed the campaign to use only his name, not his title. Even if it does use his title, he doesn’t make his “support” known in his official capacity as chairman.

And yes, the Guevara campaign requested the “kind words” of Mr. Whitbeck.

As for the elected officials who have seen the release, and were quite surprised to see both his name and title used in such a matter, Whitbeck claims he hasn’t heard a whisper of criticism about the episode and cavalierly believes it will all blow over soon.

This is either deeply naive, purposely evasive, or utter hogwash.

Whitbeck’s past relationship with Guevara is not a secret and I fully understand and appreciate standing by one’s friends.

Mr. Whitbeck largely surrendered that luxury when he took the gavel. His error is compounded because he promised up down and sideways to elected Republicans he would not get involved in primary contests.

So much for that. And the unity thing? It’s circling the bin, right along with the Trey Gowdy fliers.

We can only imagine the fun that will occur when this gang tries to organize a presidential convention in 2016…

  • Jeanine Martin

Nice post Brian. The whining gave you away as the author.
Where’s the outrage over Barbara Comstock’s statement of support for you? Why are you so busy spinning out of control over this rather than out campaigning? You need to work harder for a win and ignore distractions such as these. Your reactions are exactly why you won’t win the nomination.

    • NormLeahy

This made me laugh out loud.

      • Jeanine Martin

Really? I have never found Brian to be funny, or even mildly amusing. Everyone has a different sense of humor.

        • MD Russ

And some have no sense of humor at all. I suspect that your funny bone was surgically removed at birth.

          • Jeanine Martin

Further proof that you don’t know me at all. You should read my posts and see the humor I put into them. Or drop by sometime since we live in the same neighborhood. I love to laugh, as all my friends can tell you.

          • BrianKirwin

You write? Where? Has anyone heard of you?

          • Jeanine Martin

Hahaha, bless your heart. You need to get out more dear.

          • BrianKirwin

Oh. You’re out. I understand the hair now.

          • Eric McGrane

Well Brian, that was completely disgusting. Excellent behavior to be exhibited publicly from a “professional” consultant.

          • Jeanine Martin

It’s Bearing Drift so it’s expected. Trashy people.

          • Turbocohen

            FULL STOP. BOTH OF YOU.

          • Luke Mahoney

            Tell ’em Turbo

          • Jeanine Martin

What hair? What on earth are you babbling about?

          • MD Russ

You have friends? Who knew? And I doubt that we live in the same neighborhood. There are no trailer courts where I live.

          • Jeanine Martin

Yup, I live just down the road, two miles away, by the dirt roads. But Picnic Woods is such a mess, I wouldn’t suggest traveling it unless you do so with your truck. While I only have 4 and 1/4 acres my house is much larger, more than twice the size of your little place. Feel free to look it up. I have nothing to hide. How’s that winery working out for you? I’ll stop by and check it out. Wave when you see my on the roads. It’s the right thing to do out here in the ‘Ville. Wave to Dean too. And tell Fred George I said hey when you see him. He’s a democrat but a heck of a nice guy.

          • Savoia di Lucania

You’re not seriously comparing your McMansion on 5 acres to Merle’s colonial on 10 acres with a working winery, are you Jeanine?

          • Jeanine Martin

Hahaha, have you seen Merle’s place? Or mine? I think not, although his is a nice little colonial, mine was the model home for the neighborhood. His place is long way down a dirt road, it’s not a winery, it’s not even vineyard, yet. But in a few years, 3 to 5, he may be able to sell some grapes to one of the many wineries near us. In the meantime he can get a small tax break. People in boonies of western Loudoun love their ‘land use’ breaks, although most of them are hard pressed to break even. Thousands of grape plants to put on 5 acres is not cheap.

Are you stalking me again? That’s so tedious. Shouldn’t you be door knocking for one of your employers? They both need all the help they can get. Psssttttt,(don’t tell anyone) but they’re both going to lose. They both desperately need help so get out there tomorrow and knock some doors in Sully or Stafford.

          • Savoia di Lucania

I won’t indulge in the debate about homes, it’s too infantile. But I will note you are in the twilight years of your life yet are bragging about the quality and size of your home on the Internet.

You seems like an unhappy person.

          • Jeanine Martin

And you are trolling the internet when you should be out door knocking for the guys who pay you.
It’s not bragging if it’s the truth. How’s that room in the basement working out for you?

          • Peter A. Finocchio

So this thread has just been brought to my attention. I’m judging by the above comments that you think this Savoia person is me? I’m not really sure why.
            1. When I comment on things, I use my name, like I’m doing now.
            2. I don’t have time to spend all day arguing with people on blogs.
            3. Me comment on something at 6:45 am on a Sunday morning? That’s not happening.
            4. Savoia doesn’t have a similar writing style to me at all.
            5. He/ she seems to know a whole lot of facts about you that I wouldn’t know since we’ve had maybe one conversation and I’m not the type to gossip or stalk people.
            6. Whatever these nasty comments Savoia posted that you are referring to, I would never have said. I like to stay classy. I don’t attack people personally over a political disagreement.
So with all of that in mind, I’m curious as to why you thought this person was me. If I’m misreading this, then nevermind. But I don’t know any other former CRs who have been helping both Brian and the Speaker’s campaigns. If you still think this person is me, I’d like to know why. I’m free to chat sometime if you have concerns. I just felt I needed to set the record straight.

          • Jeanine Martin

My apologies, I know it’s not you. We know who it is. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

          • Peter A. Finocchio

            Apology accepted 🙂

          • Savoia di Lucania

I apologize if you’ve been collateral damage. That said, Jeanine has no idea who I am.

And FWIW, this isn’t about a political disagreement. This is about Jeanine running a smear campaign in what is supposed to be a clean race.

          • Jeanine Martin

Ask some of your CR friends if I seem like an unhappy person. Ask Kasha. I’m very happy. Why wouldn’t I be? I’ve been blessed throughout my life and continue to be. Life is wonderful! And fun!
It is you who sounds rather bitter and filled with hate. But I understand, both of your guys are going to lose this Spring. It’s devastating for kids like you when that happens. But you’ll get over it and live to fight another day in Stafford. Try to have some fun along the way. You are way too young to be this nasty and this bitter. Perk up! Someone else will hire you for the fall campaigns. Try not to worry about it so much and do your best to stop trolling the internet. It only makes you look foolish. (Just some advice from an ol’ geezer who is having fun. You should too!)

          • Jeanine Martin

Forgot to add, I love the name of your vineyard, and the adorable hobby horse it was named after. Both are very cute. I hope the new vines thrive.

    • Stephen Spiker

If you want to see bad reactions, look at the nonsense when some people tried to claim that Barbara Comstock didn’t endorse Brian when she endorsed Brian.

And when Pat Herrity endorsed Brian, and was accused of trying to “control” the voters of Sully District.

      • Jeanine Martin

I don’t know that I would be bragging about that endorsement. Barbara also endorsed disgraced Shawn Williams and Mike Chapman. Her track record hasn’t been impressive.

        • Stephen Spiker

          LOL

    • Nailed it and nailed it.

    • Matt Hall

Ooh it looks like we struck a nerve Ms. Martin. The Bearing Drift contributers and editors hope you get to feeling better soon.

      • Jeanine Martin

No nerves have been struck Matt. I couldn’t be happier about Whitbeck’s support for John Guevara and Anthony Bedell’s endorsement of Guevara. I understand that Brian does not agree, and he’s very upset, hence this article. Oh well. I’m sure he will feel better soon.

  • Chris B

    Everything is fine!

  • “This is either deeply naive, purposely evasive, or utter hogwash.” Well said, Norm, and thank you.

    • Turbocohen

      Re-attack RPV much Lynn?

      • MD Russ

Actually, Turbo, I thought that it was more of an attack on Whitbeck. The RPV’s culpability is limited to the fact that they elected him. Kind of makes you long for the days of Jeff Frederick, huh?

        • Turbocohen

          Stay classy MD

          • MD Russ

Is there anything that I wrote that is incorrect, Turbo? That is what I call being classy.

  • George

    What is the “past relationship”?

    • Jeanine Martin

I was wondering the same thing. First I’ve heard of a ‘past relationship’. Seems unlikely since they don’t live in the same county and never have. I wonder where Brian got that idea?

      • Savoia di Lucania

You know more than anyone that county boundaries are irrelevant, right Jeanine? I mean, you basically live in West Virginia yet associate with politicos in Fairfax. You conveniently elide this for the sake of argument.

        • Luke Mahoney

Savoia, get a life. Jeanine has done far more for our party and movement than you have, as I’ve never heard your name (which you don’t use) nor have ever seen any impact you’ve made electing Republicans. Start ponying up your time or your cash or sit down and be quiet.

          • Savoia di Lucania

Rent a friend, my Irish brother.

          • Luke Mahoney

I have plenty of friends, ask anyone, anywhere in Virginia politics who I am and you will find out. Love me or hate me, they know me. Who are you?

You keep talking and I’ll keep walking. Good luck with making a difference in the world Mr. Anonymous/Nobody Knows Your Name/Nobdody Cares

          • Savoia di Lucania

You identify yourself as a “political operative” and “victory director”. And flex your political muscles to a total stranger on an Internet blog? You have an inferiority complex or something?

          • Luke Mahoney

I don’t have to flex. You google me and see what people who pay me identify me as. My inferiority complex extends only to your lack of knowledge, young padawan.

          • Savoia di Lucania

Young? You’re not even two years out of college. Save me the nonsense.

          • Turbocohen

Savo, is that your real name?

          • Savoia di Lucania

Of course not. And you don’t know me. Not one soul on this blog or any blog on which I comment knows me. Not even the candidates that I periodically defend in those comments.

          • Jeanine Martin

And yet your company is giving buckets of money to Brian.

          • Savoia di Lucania

            Not a cent.

          • Jeanine Martin

Interesting, you haven’t even contributed money to help these candidates you supposedly support. You haven’t done anything other troll the internet.

          • Luke Mahoney

i don’t do nonsense, I deliver majorities and historical results. You deal in pseudonyms, I deal in Republican victories and donations. I walk the walk, you talk the talk. Nobody knows you because you don’t give your time or your money, so don’t give your opinion nobody gives a damn about. In fact, you remind me of the homeless guy I gave $10 to today, I feel bad for you but I’ll give you money to stop bothering me.

          • Luke Mahoney

send me a link to a kickstarter and I’ll give you $50

          • Savoia di Lucania

Shouldn’t you be playing flip cup somewhere?

          • Luke Mahoney

People like me don’t play flip cup. We play flip majority.

          • Savoia di Lucania

A young politico like you ought to be getting laid on a Friday night. Or working the rail at the Hawk. Because if there’s any weakness you’ve shown the entire Bearing Drift community, it’s sparring with an old man like me on a Friday night.

          • Savoia di Lucania

You’re embarrassing yourself, seriously. Just stop. You don’t know me, don’t know my background, my age, my political history, my business, my leanings, etc.

But I will let you in on a secret: you don’t have cred,

Have a great rest of your evening.

          • Luke Mahoney

I don’t know you because you hide behind a username. I don’t give a damn about your background, age, political history, business or learnings.

I do have cred ask your elected officials. And if you’re one of the people who doesn’t like your elected Republican leaders the I have a question for you. How many former candidates for office pass laws?

            0
            0
            0
            0

        • Jeanine Martin

Yeah, and Spiker lives in Prince William and you also live in a county other than Fairfax. And Brian has lived in Sully for a minute and half.

          • Luke Mahoney

Jeanine, we’re friends but I also owe a debt of great gratitude to the Spiker family – they are good people, the kind of people we want fighting for Republican ideas.

          • Stephen Spiker

            Appreciate the kind words, brother.

I may live in PWC now but I cut my teeth in Fairfax, and I’ve worked Sully District for multiple campaigns. I just want to keep that seat red, and to stick up for my friends.

          • Jeanine Martin

If Brian wins the nomination Smith will win with 62% to 64% of the vote. I’ve known both Kathy Smith for decades. Brian won’t come close to beating her.

          • Stephen Spiker

If Brian wins the nomination, will you join me and countless other conservatives in helping him keep Sully District in Republican hands?

          • Jeanine Martin

Sure, we can join hands and sing Kumbaya and eat S’mores, but Brian will still lose in Sully. Sad fact. Kathy Smith may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but people in Sully know her and they seem to like her. Brian simply doesn’t have the ties in Sully, they don’t know him, nor do people relate to him or like him. Again, sad facts, and reason for a candidate in Sully other than Brian. You see, I too want to keep Sully Republican and Brian is not the candidate to do that.

          • Stephen Spiker

            Predictions =/= facts.

One of these days you will learn that words have meanings. Perhaps that will help with your penchant for lying.

          • Jeanine Martin

            Sigh……..you and I both know I haven’t lied.

          • Juicy Farts

So you want the Repulican candidate to lose. Thanks for the non-support. This is why the GOP has been SO successful statewide. I mean, just look at last November. Keep pushing yourself towards irrelevance, the Dems appreciate it.

          • Jeanine Martin

I never said that I want him to lose. I said he will lose.

  • Bearing Drift coming to the defense of Brian Schoeneman? I’m shocked. Astonished. Flabbergasted. The Virginia Way thrives at Bearing Drift? Say it ain’t so! lol

So Whitbeck and the Tea Party are backing a candidate who is the son of illegal immigrants. How does that work?

    • Eric McGrane

I think you’re seeing the tea party hiding in your closet.

      • MD Russ

Nope. That was a mouse and our cat killed it.

Are you really trying to tell us that neither Whitbeck nor Guevera are supported by the Tea Party? To quote Norm, “This is either deeply naive, purposely evasive, or utter hogwash.”

        • Eric McGrane

No, I’m saying that the tea party is named in just about every single affront.

The tea party is simultaneously the most powerful entity in politics and also “dead” and ineffective.

“The Tea Party is under your beds and stealin’ yer wimmens”

          • MD Russ

I can name several organizations that are simultaneously the most powerful entity in politics and also dead and ineffective. For starters, there is Medicaid. Politicians can’t bring themselves to reform its huge expenditures but tens of millions of Medicaid patients can’t find health care providers who will accept assignment of Medicaid claims while Medicaid is paying over $24B per year in fraud, according to the GAO.

          • Jeanine Martin

Well, that’s quite a change of subject.

          • MD Russ

I agree. And Eric took us there.

          • Eric McGrane

No, I simply commented about the tea party, which was germane to discussion. This MD Russ person brought it up (that would be you). You then compared the tea party as an entity to Medicaid. That was so inane that I didn’t bother responding. Have a great weekend everyone…hopefully the tea party doesnt ruin everyone’s plans! 🙂

          • Savoia di Lucania

After reading this blather, I can’t take you seriously.

          • Before reading this blather, I couldn’t take her seriously.

          • Eric McGrane

I found your response to be particularly well thought-out out and compelling, and I’m coming around to your way of thinking on this issue. Would read again.

          • Savoia di Lucania

Thanks! I’ll be here all week.

I’m looking forward to more of your profound, informed insight.

  • Eric McGrane

Whats particularly enjoyable its that its pretty much stated that it wasn’t an actual endorsement, then criticized as an endorsement. We call that noise, people.

  • Norm, I appreciate you pointing this out, but at the end of the day, races aren’t won or lost on endorsements like this. I know that, and that’s why I’ve spent most of today fundraising, and will be spending the rest of the weekend campaigning. John and I understand each other, and he’s free to endorse or write letters of support for anyone he chooses to, just as his predecessors have.

My goal is to run a clean race, talk about issues and win the firehouse primary. I’m not letting anything distract me from that.

    • Jeanine Martin

Hahaha, you always make me laugh. Bless your heart too. Gotta love that determination and hard work. Can’t wait to see it!

      • You’re welcome to come door knocking with me tomorrow, Jeanine.

        • Luke Mahoney

Brian, we may have our differences, but, as a former political operative, I’d pay a candidate to give that answer. Well done. Well done.

          • Turbocohen

And for what its worth, I think Schoeneman and Whitbeck are both fine guys. Like Brian said, this is in so many words a non story. Full disclosure, I am a supporter of both of these gentlemen.. Both are damn good republicans.

        • Jeanine Martin

Hahaha, glad to hear you are finally get out and about in your new community! But here other candidates have beat you to the punch. I’m sure it will be fun anyway.

      • Savoia di Lucania

How exactly are you contributing to the Sully campaign, Jeanine? You don’t add value through your own blog or comments on others. Will you be helping Guevara organize? Knocking on doors with him? Bringing your vast network of connections to bear?

        • Jeanine Martin

Yes, I am helping in Sully. What about you? How many doors have you and your boy knocked? How many people have you phoned? How many endorsements have you gotten? Take your time to answer. We’ll wait.

          • Savoia di Lucania

My business gives and gets money for qualified candidates like Brian. Lots of money.

          • Jeanine Martin

Well then, we’ll soon be able to see that, won’t we?

          • Savoia di Lucania

I never stated we are giving money to Brian. Keep up the sleuthing, you’re a pro!

  • Eric McGrane

I find it very concerning that these tea party extremists would do something so radically extreme as tapping Pete Snyder for finance chair. Those rascally ideologues will stop at nothing to inject their extremely radical radical ideology, in an extreme way, into their radical staffing picks.

Did Whitbeck “step in it again” here too? (In a radically extreme manner)

  • D.j. McGuire

    Two things come to mind:

    1) Contrary to what others might think, Norm really did write this. This isn’t Brian’s style. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him use the word “hogwash,” and given how many arguments we’ve had over the years, he had plenty of opportunity to use it.

    2) Perhaps the Stimpson campaign had a vaild concern, yes?

    • Stephen Spiker

I don’t think “others” think Brian wrote this, just Jeanine, because no one 1) is more obsessed with Brian and 2) has less regard for facts than Jeanine Martin.

  • Jay Hughes

told ya Whitbeck couldn’t pour piss out of a boot with directions on the heel. Set phasers on “amateur hour”.

  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
