Webb tests the presidential waters

Former Sen. Jim Webb has taken the next step on his book tour presidential quest by setting up an official exploratory committee [1] to see whether he has a shot against Hillary Clinton. On the committee’s homepage, Webb positions himself as a “public servant, warrior, author and filmmaker.” And interesting vitae, to be sure. But then we get to the video…

The word “leaden” comes immediately to mind.

And I do appreciate the link to his website [2], which is all about flogging books.

Those who manage to remain conscious through Webb’s soliloquy may find things to like. The one who won’t find anything to like at all is Mrs. Clinton, who does not need and cannot accept a challenge from her left. Or right. Whichever side Webb decides gets him the most attention. But is he a serious threat?

At this point, no. Webb may garner some attention, but he is being outflanked on matters of war and peace by his successor, Tim Kaine. His rhetoric on fairness is quickly becoming the province of Elizabeth Warren. And the rest of his pitch is…not necessarily going to sell with a Democratic presidential electorate.

The room for a Webb candidacy, then, is small. But that does not mean he should be written off. It will be entertaining to watch Webb on the trail, trying to lure the primary voting faithful (and the big check writers) to his banner.

If for no other reason than to see whether his ego can sustain the indignities of flipping pancakes in New Hampshire.
