Campbell County convention controversy continues

debate-cartoon [1]As previously reported by Bearing Drift, a messy March mass meeting for Campbell County Republicans led to a bifurcated reprimand by the Fifth Congressional District Committee [2] and eventually to a decision by the Fifth District GOP convention [3] not to seat any Campbell County delegates.

Now word has come to us from Roanoke that the RPV convention credentials committee has decided, on a vote of 8 to 3, to seat a portion of the Campbell County delegation — but which portion and how many are both still to be decided.

As I understand it, what the credentials committee approved were any pre-file forms that had no technical errors — e.g., those lacking a signature or complete address were rejected.

What they didn’t do was ascertain the provenance of the forms they reviewed. They still don’t know whether these forms were, in fact, turned in by the pre-file deadline stated in the call, or if they were turned in later.

In addition, rather than going through the forms and settling on a number (and list of names) to submit to the convention for approval, the committee chairman said they lacked the time to review all the forms because committee members had to attend the RPV gala dinner with Paul Ryan. He adjourned the meeting until Saturday at 8 a.m., when they will presumably come up with an actual number and list of names.

Ironically, this was one of the causes of the dodgy Campbell County mass meeting in the first place. The temporary chairman and his team decided not to review all the pre-file forms in their possession that night because they were in disarray and it was 10:30 p.m. with the hundreds of meeting participants itching to go home, so they just stopped counting at about 25 and slated that number, leaving the rest in a pile. That’s what led to the dispute about the propriety of the mass meeting and whether delegates to the Fifth District and state GOP conventions were properly elected.

Stay tuned — this controversy will continue on the convention floor Saturday morning. Whether the Campbell County delegates are seated in the interest of “party unity” or rejected in the interest of adhering to the party plan will be decided by the other credentialed delegates who show up in Roanoke.
