Cold Fusion – Cross the Streams Edition

Ghostbusters turns thirty this June with its lessons apparently lost on the Nation’s political class.

In sum, paranormal activity in Pre-Guiliani New York City helps creative, yet lazy, scientists at Columbia invent a way to capture and contain ghosts. And for a profit no less.

The plot line culminates in a final pitched battle of Good versus Evil when the quartet of Ghostbusters must do the one thing that they were warned never to do in order to defeat Evil – cross the streams.

Remember the warning scene?

Egon – “It would be bad.”

Venkman “I’m kind of fuzzy on the whole good bad thing.”

Egon – “Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light”

Stanz – “*gasp* Total protonic reversal.”

Venkman – “Right. That’s bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks Egon.

Still the Ghostbusters end up deciding to Cross the Streams in order to save the planet and even say to one another “See you on the other side…”

Suicide mission. Event warranted.

Cross the Streams.

And it works. Stay Puft Marshmallow man explodes, the guy from EPA is drenched in falling marshmallow, and Zuul is vanquished to his parallel dimension.

Venkman gets the girl, Tully does their taxes, and Zedemore loves that town.

All is once again well in Gotham.

Here in the Commonwealth, the pitched battle on Medicaid expansion is about to begin.

Oh, Crossover! Cross the Streams! No. It’s just ironic that the House and Senate cross their bills over to one another this week. But I like where your head’s at.

The Streams in this case are revenue – money. In most States United, there is a little known provision that constitutionally requires that budgets be balanced. Not so at the federal level. More’s the pity.

Stream #1 – The Virginia House GOP has warned that due to unforeseen future risks in revenue flowing down from the federal government, it would be wise to reform Medicaid first and expand it later. So when revenue is more secure, it will be wisely spent and that will help more poor people get better health care. *shiver*

Stream #2 – Recently inaugurated Governor Terry McAuliffe said YESTERDAY in a statement about the biennial budget, “Although our underlying economic forecast has not changed, it is clear that the current revenue receipts warrant caution…In order to remain prudent, we must adjust our revenue estimates downward, which will help reduce future risks.”

McAuliffe, who is off to an excellent start as Governor, suggests prudence and caution in the face of risk. He will be hailed as wise, “moderate”, or worse “conservative” (shhh), and able to listen to his advisors. Maybe even a 2016 running mate for Hillz? (Texting reply from her Invisible Plane – Thinking MRW. But nice move. Like it. XOXO)

The House? Uncompromising. Obstinate. Ultra Conservative whack jobs just trying to placate their base by refusing to Band Aid the severed policy artery know as ObamaCare. They obviously hate people. Mainly children. Your children. Especially the fat ones. How they hate other people’s fat kids. And kittens posted on Facebook. Lord, how they hate Facebook kittens.

Enter another constitutionally mandated lever in the Virginia governing machine – deadlines.

Soon the good people both Left and Right will be facing – Zuuuuul a.k.a The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and they will have to decide whether or not to Cross the Streams.

Time will be up. Same streams in hand. Combine them and make the Streams stronger, right?

But…”it would be bad.”

There is a compromise to be had on Medicaid expansion and it’s not terribly difficult.

It can wait until after April, but not too terribly long after as the impact of ObamaCare continues apace.

*Breaking News! The Federal Government issues another election year waiver*

But are you, Alice, “willing to compromise” at this time?

“What’s THAT got to with it?”

“Back off man…I’m a scientist.”

Political scientist, that is.

Folks, we’re still in the Main Branch of the New York City Library scene of Ghostbusters.

It’s early.

Later?

Cross the Streams….

In a fiscally prudent, market based way that secures health care for the poor and disabled.

No…wait…it can’t be….

Yes, it’s Politics – where it’s not about what you want, but what you are willing to give up.

Policy is about what you want.

Money and deadlines force you to Cross the Streams.

There’s definitely a slim chance we’ll all survive.
