McAuliffe’s month of ethical hot water

He’s been Governor nearly one month and the former Clinton fundraiser Terry McAuliffe is already trotting along the ethical line and perhaps even crossing it.

The Washington Times reports that the General Assembly made it clear that Inauguration funds can’t be transferred to campaign accounts. The law was inspired by the completely unethical actions of now-Senator Tim Kaine who turned his swearing-in to a Democrat campaign kitty.

“Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, used $400,000 of his inaugural funds as seed money to form a political action committee. Mr. Kaine raised nearly $3.2 million for his 2006 inauguration and contributed roughly $80,000 to Democratic candidates out of the inaugural fund…

A Republican-led General Assembly subsequently tightened the laws governing the purposes for which inaugural funds can be spent. Now, excess funds can only be returned to contributors or donated to charity.(WashTimes)

Bob McDonnell, the one Democrats say is unethical, donated his excess funds totaling over $100,000 to charities.

But the ethical leader and example for all our children, Terry McAuliffe, must’ve figured if he can’t spend a surplus on politics, he better spend it all on politics to make sure there isn’t a surplus.

McAuliffe wrote checks totaling $211,000 to his own campaign account and to the Democrat Party. For what?

List rentals.

Really? Really?

A quarter million dollars to his own campaign or his own Party for lists they already had and likely had already used throughout 2013?

Couldn’t Governor Deal-Maker figure a way for his own campaign to make the lists an in-kind donation?

Even so, it seems McAuliffe set a record. The most expensive list purchase on record was when Hillary Clinton’s team (hmmmm) got over $60,000 for selling a list to Obama’s team.

Not sure how a statewide list qualifies for 4 times the price of a national one.

Could it be that McAuliffe figured the way getting around the ban on padding political accounts with surplus money is to write the checks early enough so that it can’t be seen as surplus? Like in November and December?

Couple this with McAuliffe offering six-figure government jobs for endorsements, in this excellent article by Norm Leahy, and McAuliffe is not exactly becoming the ethical standard-bearer Virginia Democrats would have probably hoped for.

The only question remaining is whether any Democrat will attempt to even investigate a Democrat Governor. Certainly their zeal in investigating any Republican within earshot suggests they have the ability.

Or is Attorney General Herring too busy moonlighting at gay marriage hearings to do his actual job?
