We Need Bob McDonnell for Ken Cuccinelli

One person’s absence from the campaign trail has been one of the more unwritten stories in the 2013 campaign race.

Sitting Republican governor Bob McDonnell.

You might remember him, electedin 2009 by 17 points in a landslide that at this point four years ago saw everyone but Creigh Deeds knowing the race was over. Victory staffers were polishing resumes and angling for administrative positions.

What a difference four years makes.

Rankled by the Johnnie Williams/Star Scientific shenanigans throughout the summer, McDonnell has gone quiet for Cuccinelli, clearly at the Cuccinelli’s camp request.

Bob initially did some fundraisers for Ken after Bill Bolling dropped out of the race, but those efforts dissipated quickly during the spring and ended once and for all in the summer after the news cycle went very very anti-Bob McDonnell.

Now, its fifteen days before the election and every poll done shows Ken Cuccinelli down mid to high single digits, internal polling has it at mid single digits, and it’s time for a difference maker.

Ken, call Governor McDonnell.

We’re talking about a governor who’s approval ratings in nearly every poll are 50+%. A governor who has seen one of the largest drops in unemployment rates throughout the country. A governor who everyone, Democrats and Republicans (and crucially important independents) agree has done a fantastic job as governor. A governor who has put in place bipartisan efforts on: transportation, restoring felon rights, education reform, land conservation, government reform, cutting spending, and putting in place a budget surplus four consecutive years.

The record speaks for itself. More importantly, voters and constituents are speaking: Bob McDonnell is still popular.

Why not do it?

Johnnie Williams and Star Scientific.

It’s the only reason not to, and frankly at this point, it’s not a good reason. For better or worse, Ken Cuccinelli has had his say regarding his acceptance of gifts from Williams. There’s nothing more to be said, and nothing more needs to be. Bringing McDonnell onto the trail won’t make things any worse, and it can only make them better. There will be some requisite Democratic talking points about Williams, but the minimal impact of that will be more than offset by getting Governor McDonnell out to the voters and letting him do what he does best: connect.

Ken Cuccinelli is running to replace and replicate Governor McDonnell, but you wouldn’t know it by the campaign. Governor McDonnell has a litany of successes that should rightfully be championed by Cuccinelli, yet few if any have been heard. We need Republicans for statewide governance, and we should continue what’s working.

It’s a message that works. Hell, at this point, it’s a message.

The current path to victory is drive down turnout. If it’s the only path, then let’s create a new one.

Call Bob McDonnell and hold rallies, events, anything and everything and get BOTH of y’all out in front of voters. Do ads, do mailings, and tie yourself to Governor McDonnell.

Fifteen days out, we need a game changer, and we have one sitting in elected office.

Let’s use him.
