The folks over at Blue Virginia are just positively giddy about McEachin being made campaign chairman [2], ostensibly to save Northam’s flagging campaign and lackluster fundraising efforts from his campaign staff.
Of course, the folks here at Bearing Drift couldn’t be more pleased… or perhaps, oddly concerned.
Because while Don McEachin has been strangely quiet about the whole ethics scandals enveloping Richmond, it could very well be because McEachin’s big dollar friends have problems of their own [3]. In fact, we’re not talking mere financial problems… we’re talking felony problems [4]:
Billy G. Jefferson Jr., head of River City Real Estate, was charged Thursday with eight felony counts of forging and uttering public records by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
“The charges stem from the submission of false documents to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources,” according to a statement released Thursday by the State Police. “The submission of the false documents has resulted in over two million dollars in tax fraud to the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
The charges were related to four of Jefferson’s real estate projects that were certified for state tax credits in 2012, the DHR said in a statement Thursday.
These guys donated $5,000 to McEachin’s unopposed 2011 run for State Senate [5].
Are these the types of donors that Northam intends to bring in to finance his LG bid?
