IRS Targeted Groups Trying to “Make America a Better Place”

As with the tax code and the (un)Affordable Care Act it is tasked with enforcing, the more we learn about the latest scandal at the Internal Revenue Service, the worse it gets.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that, in addition to inappropriately scrutinizing groups with the words “tea party” or “patriot” in their names as early as 2010 (even improperly requesting names of their donors), by June 2011 the IRS had broadened its criteria to target groups involved in such threatening activities as “advocacy/lobbying to ‘make America a better place to live’.”

Now, anyone familiar with what the IRS does and how it does it might think that “to ‘make America a better place'” runs counter to the agency’s mission and activities. And of course, the early patriots protested a tax far less draconian than today’s Byzantine mess at the event we remember as the Boston Tea Party, so it’s in a way understandable that the IRS would seek to smother groups that consider themselves these patriots’ successors.

Understandable, but not excusable. The IRS is an agency whose central mission undermines the economic justice for which the original patriots fought. It is appalling, but not surprising, that it also acts to chill the freedom of political expression that is vital to the self-government that they established.
