The term gerrymander was first used on this day in 1812. Elkanah Tinsdale drew the cartoon titled “The Gerry-Mander.” It depicted the district created by the Massachusetts legislature to favor the candidates of Governor Elbridge Gerry’s Democratic-Republican party over the Federalists.
The cartoon was originally published in the Boston Gazette, March 26, 1812.
