Bob McDonnell on taxes increases, then and now

Candidate Bob McDonnell in a 2009 interview [1] on transportation funding:

…should the General Assembly send him a transportation plan that increases taxes, Mr. McDonnell said in an hourlong Associated Press Interview, he will veto it.

And later in the same interview:

Mr. McDonnell said he would not support new taxes in the current economy. Should lawmakers later agree on new transportation taxes that eluded them in failed special sessions in 2006 and 2008, the taxes would face a veto.

“Any general increase in the taxes of Virginia I’m not going to support,” he said. “I’m not planning to raise taxes. That’s the best I can tell you.”

Governor Bob McDonnell today [2] on the transportation bill that will…raise taxes:

The Commonwealth’s chief executive, an often-mentioned 2016 Presidential contender, says the bill is not perfect, but it’s necessary for Virginia to be revitalized as the job creation magnet it once was, and to improve the quality of life of those who live in the highly congested corridors. “I’ve encouraged everyone to support this bill,” he stated.
