We have four more days. The endorsements are done. You know how you’re going to vote.
The only thing we don’t know is the final outcome. As much as it sounds cliché, the candidate that wins will be the candidate who motivates his supporters to get to the polls.
Right now that momentum is with Mitt Romney and George Allen. We don’t anticipate that any Virginia congressional seats will change hands.
By this time next week, your phone won’t be ringing, your mailbox won’t be stuffed, and your email won’t be overflowing.
I’d be lying if I said I’d miss that.
Fortunately for Virginia, every year is an election year. I sort of feel the same way about that as when my Mom used to say “every day is children’s day.”
What a bunch of…stuff (it’s Irish).
But back to this year. Get out and vote. Take your neighbors out to vote. Make sure your friends vote.
I suspect that if you’re a Bearing Drift reader, you don’t miss the opportunity to vote. You understand that it’s not a right, it’s a duty.
There are a lot of problems with our electoral system. But that’s no reason to check out and not be involved. In fact, that’s all the more reason to be involved and to try to make the system better.
It won’t happen overnight.
And while nobody is saying that any of our candidates are perfect, the choices are clear. Mitt Romney won’t save us, but he can make things less bad and stop the downward spiral of the Obama years.
A Republican Senate with George Allen can’t solve all of our problems. But look at the damage done when the other party has been in control. Without a Republican Senate, we don’t get rid of Obamacare.
Unless we have another nightmare like 2000 (and that’s possible), come Wednesday morning it will all be over.
Whatever the results, the sun will rise. The kids will go back to school. Most of us will go back to work. We might even find that Facebook is a nice place to be.
Just in time for them to screw with the format again.
Those of us of the political geek variety will assess and argue over projections and outcomes on Tuesday. Then we’ll file that away and start looking toward the next race. Because, that’s what we do.
For the life of me, sometimes I don’t know why.
The answer to that, of course, is that it really does matter, and we can make a difference.
That. Or we really are geeks.
Either way it’s time to close the deal.
