Friday Whine and Cheese: This is no time to go wobbly

This column was shaping up to be all about rallying the troops in the face of what the pundits and the polls and the squishy “Republicans” were assuring us was “over.”

We needed a clarion call, a reminder of what Abraham Lincoln (a Republican no matter how many times Barack Obama tries to quote him) said:

“The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.”

Mitt Romney said in his closing remarks, this race is bigger than Mitt Romney or Barack Obama, it’s bigger than either party. It’s about where our country is going. Do we stay on the failed path of the last four years? Or do we take a bold new direction?

This. Is. Not. Over.

As Senator Blutarsky asked, “Was it over when the German’s bombed Pearl Harbor?”

Before the debate, I was all set to rally the troops because we don’t fight to win.

We fight for what’s right

Then Wednesday, Barack Obama got Mitt-Slapped and I said “what the hell? Let’s fight for both!”

Face it, even MSNBC had to admit that Mitt Romney ate Barack Obama’s government approved lunch and his anniversary dinner.

It remains to be seen if the debate was a real game changer. But right now, it certainly feels like it.

The right is energized. The left defeated.

But we must not become complacent.

While the President may have returned the bust to England, we still respect and revere Winston Churchill who said:

Never give in–never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

We are 31 days out from the election. You can rest assured that after Romney’s amazing performance in the debate, the left is going to throw out everything they can.

We’re not just campaigning against Barack Obama and the Democrats. We’re campaigning against the media, and the unions and the special interests. We’re campaigning against people who love power more than principle.

But even though we know it’s going to get ugly, really ugly Or we can stand with that brave crew from Galaxy Quest, “Never give up! Never Surrender!”

You thought it was ugly when they called him a felon. You thought it was ugly when they said he was responsible for a woman’s cancer.

If we could only hope that’s the worst we will see. But we know better.

And this morning, the Associated Press confirms: The heart of Obama’s new message with less than five weeks to go: Romney is a liar.

And we also know that there are things worth fighting for. As Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee made their way alone to the Mountain of Doom, all seemed hopeless, but Sam had faith.

Sam: It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end it’s only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it’ll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there’s some good in the world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for. There’s still good in this world. There’s still life in this country. And it’s worth fighting for.

No, Mitt Romney cannot and will not save America. That task is greater than any one man’s ability to do. But he most certainly can save us from the assured destruction that will come with another four years of an Obama Administration.

We have 31 days. And a battle to fight.

What are we waiting for?
