The WaPo goes there: “no serious tea party challenger” to Allen

The WaPo’s “Friday Line [1]” takes a look at the top ten Senate races in the country and, sure enough, Virginia’s contest clocks in at #9. But it does so with a vicious twist:

The good news for former senator George Allen is that he didn’t run into a serious tea party primary challenger, and he’s virtually assured of winning the GOP nomination 11 days from now. The bad news is that the last few polls here have shown Obama holding on to a lead in the Commonwealth. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: It’s hard to believe that Obama voters would cross over to vote for Allen. We expect this Senate race to closely mirror the presidential.

No “serious tea party primary challenger.” That has to hurt.

Then again, this is coming from the Post, which has a knack for misreading political culture south of Wilson Boulevard. But still…that sting is going to need some ice.
