Remembering William C. Wampler, Sr.

Tonight, we’ve received the news that former Congressman William C. Wampler, Sr. has passed away.

Wampler represented the “Fighting 9th” District in far Southwest, Virginia first for a term in the early 1950s, then returning to Congress in 1966 where he remained until losing to Rick Boucher in 1982. His son, William C. Wampler, Jr. retired last year from the Senate of Virginia after 24 years.

I grew up in the 9th District, and Bill Wampler was the first Congressman I remember and probably one of the first campaigns I for which I ever volunteered.

Griffith Statement on Passing of Former U.S. Rep. William C. Wampler Sr.

May 23, 2012 – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) released the following statement today after receiving the news that former Ninth District Congressman William C. Wampler Sr. had died:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Ninth District Congressman William Wampler, ‘The Bald Eagle of the Cumberlands.’ Bill was a good friend and a courageous public servant. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Lee; his children; friends; and loved ones. May God give them comfort during this difficult time.”
