We’re still paying for the War of 1812

In today’s Daily Press, this brilliant author shines a big bright light on a tax intended to pay for the War of 1812, and almost 200 years later is still around.

“BPOL stands for the Business, Professional and Occupational License tax. It might as well stand for Businesses Put Out of Livelihood, especially for startup companies that rarely turn a profit early but still pay BPOL taxes as if they did.”

Del. Sal Iaquinto and City Councilwoman Rosemary Wilson, both of Virginia Beach, teamed up to take a chunk out of it, help new businesses and maybe get us on the road to eliminating it entirely.
