Cuccinelli: No on Senate Run, Maybe for Governor

In an article [1] on the Virginia Politics Blog of the Washington Post, Anita Kumar describes an interview that Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli gave to Virginia Insight with Tom Graham in which he did not rule out a run for governor in 2013.

There has been widespread interest among TEA Party and other conservative activists for a Cuccinelli run in 2013, and Cuccinelli has a formidable political network in place around the Commonwealth.

If he were to launch a gubernatorial run he would likely have access to money and support from around the Commonwealth and the nation. With the Democrats looking at names like Terry McAuliffe, who has significant fundraising ability, it would be wise for Republicans to nominate someone who can energize the grassroots activists. Many certainly believe that Cuccinelli is the man to do this.

He did deny interest in a 2012 run for the United States Senate. In response to a potential run, the WaPo quotes him as saying, “I’m going to stay right where I am here through 2013.”

The article does mention that Cuccinelli continues to state that he expects to run for reelection, however, this is one of the most clear statements to date from the Attorney General that he is open to a gubernatorial run.
