McDonnell Gives a Solid Performance at 2010 Values Voters Summit

The 2010 Values Voters Summit which wrapped up this past weekend produced several surprises. Namely, the fact that Mike Pence came in an unexpected first place finish in the 2012 Presidential Straw Poll.

I had the privilege to attend the event on Saturday, and I was impressed with the new found conservative enthusiasm. However, as an ardent observer and a proud Virginian I was very impressed with Governor McDonnell’s performance at the event. While he did not place incredibly high in the Presidential Straw Poll, this was due largely to the fact that he was not a familiar face to many in the crowd. When I heard that he was slated to speak on Saturday, I decided to make a point to see how he was received among the pro-family activists at the Summit. His speech hit on several national themes. McDonnell discussed the need to repeal Obamacare and to fight for free market solutions to our national economic problems. He also brought attention to the Life and Family issues, making mention of the Covenant Marriage bill that he championed in the General Assembly. Lastly, he made mention of the need to take care of our veterans, citing a quote from President Washington about the connection between support for Veterans and future military vitality.

He also did a good job of connecting with the audience. He kept the speech interesting and received several standing ovations.

It was very Presidential.
